Mounties dominate Hot Dogs for 4-0 start

FRANKFORT – Southmont pushed all the right buttons in a 60-7 football win over Frankfort.

The win moves the Mounties to 4-0 for the second season in a row, and puts them at 2-0 in the Sagamore Conference.

South got points from the offense, the defense and the special teams as they cruised to the win, dropping Frankfort to 2-2 overall and 0-2 in the league.

“We were able to dominate in all three phases, and score in all three phases,” Mounties coach Desson Hannum said. “We played good football and cut down on our mistakes from previous weeks. Going forward in the season, that is so big – you can’t have mistakes.”

South made few mistakes as they scored 20 points in each of the first two quarters to put the running clock in motion for the second half.

The big lead also gave the coaches chances to look at other players

“We played the 2’s (second string) in the third quarter and the jv in the fourth,” Hannum noted. “They got reps and they scored.”

The numbers piled up quickly and were very lopsided for the unbeaten Mounties.

Starting with 434 rushing yards, South was able to move the ball on the ground in any way, shape or form.

Wyatt Woodall had 113 yards on nine carries, all in the first half. The junior scored once.

Carson Chadd got the ball twice, and scored twice.

The senior had carries of 29 and then 39 yards.

Kion Cornelius also got into the end zone twice, his first two scores of the season. The senior finished with 63 yards on four carries.

Sophomore Micah Kiger scored a fourth-quarter TD on a two-yard run.

And then there was Cale Chadd.

After the Hot Dogs got their only score late in the game, and after the South kick team bobbled the ball to start the drive on the 8-yard line, the freshman took the handoff, broke through the line, broke a couple tackles and then finished the 92-yard run, leaving blue jersies in his wake.

The defense got in on the scoring action, as Cornelius pulled a pick in and turned it into six with a 42-yard run. It was one of two interceptions by the Mounties, as Trip Ward, while not kicking extra points, had a first-quarter pick.

The special teams did their share, with an EJ Brewer 64-yard punt return in the first quarter.

“We ran the ball really well, but our passing game was just a little off target tonight,” Hannum said, noting Nick Scott’s 2-of-8 passing night for 48 yards, “and our defense was solid.”

The Hot Dogs came out throwing the ball and never stopped, as they attempted 40 passes, but completing 19, but for only 164 yards and the late TD.

Hot Dogs QB Doug Wood was harassed all game, sacked twice, picked twice and tipped twice.

“We had a thought they might come out throwing,” Hannum said, “so we went to an extra DB – we didn’t want to have to rush an extra guy, and I thought we got good pressure on him. Aaron McMasters was that extra DB and did a good job with a couple pass break ups. The front line got their 6-3 hands in the air and made it tough to throw over. ”

Frankfort finished with 164 pass yards and only 19 rush yards.

Quentcy Perry and Jakob Burns each grabbed seven passes. Perry had the TD catch.

The win sees South at 4-0 for the second straight season, with a county and conference matchup at Crawfordsville next Friday.

“Any county matchup is big,” Hannum said. “We just have to come out, match up, and not have mistakes. I thought once we got here tonight we got locked in and got rolling. We executed our game plan on both offense and defense.”

The Hot Dogs travel to Lebanon next Friday.
