Mounties hold off Wildcats for 13th win

Tuesday Southmont’s boys basketball team made the trek to take on South Vermillion as boys teams around the state begin their stretch runs as the season is in its final weeks. The Mounties made the trip a a successful one as they bested South Vermillion 71-63.

The 71 points are a season high for the Mounties. They got things going with a 17-point opening quarter. However the Wildcats scroed 16 of their own after the first eight minutes. South broke things open in the second out-scoring the home team 21-12 to take a 38-28 lead into halftime. A key moment in the game came in that second quarter where down 20-18, the Mounties proceeded to go on a 13-0 run.

Both offenses scored 11 in the third before both coming alive in the final quarter. The Wildcasts scored 24 points, but couldn’t hold the Mounties as South scored 22 of their own. Vince Reimondo knocked down some key free-throws late as the Mounties walked away with the win.

In the win Reimondo led the way for Southmont as he scored 17 points. South had two others in double-figures as Carson Chadd scored 14 and Carter Hubble added 13. Hayden Hess, EJ Brewer, and Trip Ward all scored eight while Lucas Oppy added two and Kyler McCandless one.

The win for the Mounties improves their record to a very impressive 13-5 on the season. They’ll be back on the road for another challenge on Saturday when they visit the Class A No. 5 ranked Fountain Central Mustangs (15-4).
