Southmont football began the season with a dominating 49-19 week one win over Fountain Central in week one and now the Mounties shift their focus to week two. They’ll hit the road to take on the North Putnam Cougars, a team that fell against fellow Montgomery County foe in the North Montgomery Chargers (40-16) a week ago. The Cougars are a team the Mounties have taken care of the last three seasons.
In the week one over Fountain Central the Mountie offense got whatever they wanted, tallying over 500 total yards of offense. They were led by senior fullback Wyatt Woodall’s monster game on the ground as he ran for 196 yards and four touchdowns. As a team the Mounties had 387 yards on the ground with 12 different players getting a touch. Senior QB Nolan Boyer in his first game at the helm threw for 130 yards on an efficient 9-13.
The Mounties have been able to watch the film this week from the North Montgomery game and coach Desson Hannum knows his team will have to be prepared if they want to start 2-0.
“North Put has a good quarterback,” Hannum said. “That’s the thing that stands out the most and they have some skill guys around him that we’re going to have to make sure we take care of. We’ll have to make sure we tackle in open space to prevent big plays to not let their offense get started.”
Against the Chargers a week ago sophomore QB Christian Kramer went 10-20 for 117 yards and 1TD. Brogan Woodall was the Cougars leading receiver with four catches for 59 yards.
Last week against the Mustangs saw the first time many of the Mounties played in a meaningful varsity game. Others were in new positions as well so coming into week two, Hannum says it’s all about getting those guys more familiar and comfortable with their roles.
“We hope that these guys will just continue that smooth transition and grow into those spots,” Hannum said. “There’s going to be some growing pains along the way and we know that. We had some missed tackles and some missed assignments last week but you have to be willing to live with those things as these guys are growing into those varsity roles and different positions that they didn’t play last year.”
Southmont and North Putnam’s kickoff has been pushed back to an 8 p.m. start due to the expected heat on Friday. You can stay up to date on the game as JR_Sports on twitter will be providing live updates.
