Mounties place third at Southmont Invite

Posted

Southmont and the Crawfordsville Country Club hosted the annual Southmont Invite Saturday morning with all three Montgomery County schools participating. On the day the host Mounties placed third overall with a team score of 395. South finished behind Western Boone’s 385 and Brownsburg’s JV team who won the meet overall. Addison Meadows coming in had been medalist in every single meet of her junior season. That streak came to an end but not for what Meadows did as she fired a 73 (+2) on the day. Lawrence Central’s Alli Seitz shot an even par 71 to take home medalist honors.

“I’m proud of how I played today,” Meadows said after the meet. “I had some really close birdie putts that just didn’t fall and that’s golf. Some of those shots are going to fall and some aren’t. My driver felt great today and a lot of people come to this course thinking its easy and that couldn’t be further from the truth. Congrats to Alli for shooting a 71 because not many people can come to this course and do what she did.”

Along with Meadows carding a 73, Southmont also got a 106 from Parker Church, 107 from Addison Kendricks and a 109 from Hanna Long. Kesley Thompson ended her day with a 110. The goal coming in for the Mounties was a 380 that coach Bill Whalen set for the team. With some big meets on the horizon in the coming weeks as the girls golf season winds down, South as a team isn’t quite where Whalen wants them just yet.

“I told them we have to stop having our scores beginning with one’s,” he said. “We have to get rid of that vertical line and start having eight’s and nine’s to begin our scores. Until we do that, this is right around what we’re going to be shooting. To be competitive and have a chance in the conference and the sectional we’re going to have to be around 380. It’s a little disappointing that we’re unable to play our home course better.”

Crawfordsville ended the day shooting a 450 and was led by both Carli Payne and Emery Allen who both shot 111’s. Nancy Blanchard finished right behind them with a 112 while Ciara Wilke rounded out the scoring for the Athenians with a 116.  CHS was without the services of both Ada Hutson and Gabby Warren on the day. Warren the past two meets for the Athenians had been the low score for CHS two our of the last three meets.

“We got into some trees and made some pretty poor choices with our next shots and we’re going to address that Monday at practice,” Thomas said. “We had some overall good shots but if you don’t play this course right, you can get yourself into trouble very quickly. We’ll get better and the good news is I walked 4.2 miles today. “

North Montgomery, in their first 18-hole meet of the season, ended the day shooting a 509. Shayna Ratcliff shot a 114, Jazmen Newlin a 133, Krestyn Bradford 135, and Claire Grimes a 137.

All three county teams will be back at the Country Club here in a few weeks when the Sagamore Conference gets together for the SAC Meet on Sept. 9
