A year ago the Mounties were able to capture their second sectional title in the last four seasons. That team for the Mounties was led by a group of six seniors. Coming into 2023 a new crop of players will look to replicate the success of last year’s team.
Southmont returns seniors DeLorean Mason and Cheyenne Shaw along with junior Mallory Mason as the three returning varsitiy starters from last year’s team. Rounding out the varsity roster will be a plethora of junior varsity players from a year ago. Juniors Lillian Alfrey, Jenna Grino, and Catie Himes will be paired with sophomores Kenzie Douglas and Kendall Priebe to round out the roster.
Erin Barry enters her third season of leading the Mounties and has already seen great things from this year’s team.
“This group of young ladies have worked extremely hard this summer and in the early weeks of the season,” Barry said. “They had the taste of winning last year and really want to continue that this year. The have set several goals for themselves and the team.”
In terms of what Barry sees as strenghts for this year’s team Barry added that she’s been impressed with her girls’ scrappiness and hustle out on the court. Add that with their hard working ability during practice and those are traits that she believes can take this team far.
With having new players in new positions, that does come with some challenges, especially early in the season as everyone is settling into their roles.
“One challenge for us early on will be figuring each other out and communication,” Barry said. “We have several girls in different positions so we will continue to work together and feel more comfortable as a unit. “
The Mounties open up their season on Tuesday with a road game at Frankfort before hosting Sagamore Conference foe Frankfort Thursday in their home opener.
