Saturday Southmont athletics welcomes a new class into it’s Hall of Fame. The ceremony begins at 6 pm at Southmont high school. Here’s a complete list of all the inductees for the class of 2022.
David Wilson, 1968 Graduate of Ladoga, 2022 Legends Inductee
David is the son of Charlie M. and Audrey Wilson both passed. He is also the older brother to Hall of Fame member Dan Wilson. He is married to Mary Lou Wilson. They have three adult children, Travis Wilson, Kelly Wilson Krug, and Amy Wilson Marchand. They are the grandparents of Kamaran Krug, Kody Krug, Asher Wilson, and Annika Wilson. He is a 1968 graduate of Ladoga High School and 1973 graduate of Indiana University.
During high school, David played football all four years lettering his final three years--JV as a freshman. He played basketball all four years also lettering his final three years--JV as a freshman. His junior year they defeated Darlington in OT and ended up Runner Up in the County Tourney. David participated in track and field as a sprinter and thrower all four years lettering his final three years--JV as a freshman. His senior year, Dave was the County Champion in the Shot Put and set a new school record of 49’ 10”. He lettered all four years in baseball and held the school record for career home runs (11) upon graduation. He hit (six) his senior year which was also a school record. His junior season, Ladoga finished in a three-way tie for the WRC title.
Memorable Moments: “At home baseball games, I was able to hit several homeruns across the street into my front yard while Mom and Dad were sitting there watching our games.” David worked 25 years for the State of Indiana with the Indiana State Police Department and the Indiana State Department of Personnel. He and Mary Lou also owned and operated Wilson Family Meats for twelve years
David served 25 years as a Director for the Farmer’s State Bank/Hoosier Heartland State Bank; was a 40-year member of the Ladoga Lion’s Club; 44-year member of the Indiana Masonic Lodge and served seven years with the Indiana National Guard. David and Mary Lou are also members of Woodland Heights Christian Church
Rick DeWitt, 1964 Graduate of New Market, 2022 Legends Inductee
Rick is married to Ruth DeWitt. He has one adult daughter Tracy S. Kelly.
He played football as a freshman and junior. Rick played basketball 9-12 and ran track 9-12.
As a senior, Rick competed in the 880 yard run at the State Meet. Results are unknown. In the Regional, he finished third in a time of 1:59.8. He was the Sectional Champion at Terre Haute with in a time of 2:02. In the County Meet, he ran the mile in 4:41.6, the 880 in 2:07.6 a County Record at the time. He ran the 440 in a time of 54.0. He also ran a leg of the mile relay. Rick tied for most points scored in the meet. New Market won the County Championship with 50 points. Darlington was second with 19.
As a junior, Rick’s best time in the mile run was 4:42.6 and in the 880 yard run 2:08.5, a County Record at the time. As a sophomore at the County Meet, he finished second in the mile run with a 4:48.0 but did not place in the 880. In the Big 4 Conference Meet, he set a new record in the mile (4:45.4) and the 880 (2:09.2). As a freshman, Rick did not place in the County Meet and finished 4th in the Big 4 Conference Meet in both the mile run and 880 yard run.
After high school, Rick worked at R.R. Donnelly for 46 years as a material handler, assistant pressman, 4 Star pressman, and press support.
Allen Norris, 1963 Graduate of New Ross, 2022 Legends Inductee
Allen was married to Carolyn for many years before she passed. They had one son Rich who graduated from Southmont in 1982. Rich and his wife had two daughters, Katie and Allie Norris, who were County and Conference Champions in track and field at Southmont. Allen, a 1963 graduate of New Ross High School, played four years of varsity basketball, four years of varsity track, and one year of varsity baseball.
Basketball – lettered four years, named All County and All Sectional both his junior and senior seasons, leader in rebounding three years, averaged 16 boards per game and 10 points per game.
Track and Field – lettered four years, two year County Champion in the shot put. First meet of his senior year, Al tore muscles in his back requiring season-ending surgery. He was working with Owen Huntsman of Wabash College and throwing over sixty feet consistently when he was injured.
Allen enrolled at Butler University and played one season of football. New Ross did not have a football team, and Allen was surprised when Coach Tony Hinkle of Butler asked him to play. He started on the freshman team as an offensive lineman and was later moved to the starting defense as a defensive end. After that one semester, he joined the United States Air Force.
Allen served in the military and for the government for over 25 years. In 1974 he was named the Army’s Soldier of the Year.
He also worked for Rodeway Express as a diesel mechanic for 30 years while serving in the military part-time. In 1986 he was named the Rodeway Express Mechanic of the Year.
In 1965 Allen had the opportunity to play on a basketball team of outstanding servicemen who won the All Armed Services National Tournament.
While living in New Ross, Allen coached Little League baseball for two years. From 2005 - 2010, Allen coached the throwing events (shot put and discus) as part of the track and field staff of Boys’ and Girls’ Head Coach Marvin Walters enjoying much success.
After retiring from the U.S. Air Force, the government, and Rodeway Express, he currently farms with Denny Henry.
Herschel Tague, 1963 Graduate of Waveland, 2022 Legends Inductee
Herschel is the son of Harold and Minna Tague. He is married to Elizabeth (Beth). They have three adult children, Jeffrey Tague, Amy Ambrose and Brian Tague. Herschel is a 1963 graduate of Waveland High School. He attended Indiana State University and IUPUI.
In high school Herschel played four years of basketball (lettering all four) and baseball (lettering all four) and three years of track and field (lettering all three).
His baseball team was Montgomery County champions twice.
His sophomore year in basketball, he was named All County, All Sectional, and was the third leading scorer in the county. Both his junior and senior years in basketball, he earned All County, All Sectional and was the second leading scorer in the county. He was also named the Lion’s Club Senior Athlete.
Altogether, Herschel led Waveland in scoring three years, rebounding one year, field goal % one year and free throw % one year. He averaged 16.4 points per game for his career of 63 games. He totaled 1,035 points for his career.
For many years, Herschel was the owner and president of Bryant Heating and Air Conditioning in Indianapolis. He also served as a Board Member of the Heating and Air Conditioning Association of the Greater Indianapolis Area and was a school board member for several years.

Elliot Vice, 2002 Graduate, 2022 Inductee
Elliot is the son of David and Jan Vice. He is married to Margaret. They are the proud parents of Emilia (2) and Theodore (Teddy) (3).
Football – lettered as a junior and senior; as a senior he was named Journal Review Offensive Player of the Year (2000); Journal & Courier Small School All-Area First Team (2000); Bloomington Herald Tribune Second Team Junior All State Offense (2000); Finished 7th in the State in passing yards, averaging 233.2 passing yards per game; SHS Outstanding Offensive Back Award (2000); SHS Football Outstanding Senior Scholar Athlete Award (2001)

He is currently the Director of Government Affairs for the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) in Washington, DC.
McKenzi (Jordan) Bell, 2014 Graduate, 2022 Inductee
McKenzi is the daughter of Jeff and Connie Jordan. She is married to Bailey. They are the parents of Adeline (Della) Bell (5), Roman (1), and pregnant due in February. She attended the University of Southern Indiana and The Salon Professional Academy.
Gymnastics – lettered all four (4) years; was selected Rookie of the Year as a freshman.
Softball - lettered all four (4) years; McKenzi led Southmont to a runner-up finish in the State Championship game in 2014. She was selected All State (across all four classes) as a senior. She was named the National Player of the Week twice by Max Preps as a senior. She was selected All Regional as a senior; was selected All Sectional all four (4) years; was selected 1st Team All Sagamore Conference all four (4) years; was selected All Area all four (4) years; was selected All County all four (4) years; Journal Courier named her to the All Area Team all four (4) years; Journal Review named her Softball Player of the Year all four (4) years; Journal Review named her as one of the Top Ten Athletes of the last decade. She was voted Southmont’s MVP all four (4) years. She earned the Mental Attitude Award, Hustle Award, and Rookie of the Year Award during her career. She was named Captain as senior.
Her senior year stats included 32 Games, Ave. .504, 58 Hits, 59 Runs, 39 RBI’s, 11 Home Runs, 3 triples, 19 doubles, 29 singles, 11 walks, 16 stolen bases. She pitched in 30 games, 19 wins, 8 losses, 302 K’s, 9 shut outs, ERA 1.53, Innings pitched 173.1.
She pitched shutouts until Semi-State (4 Games). She scored 4 of the 5 runs in regional and pitched a no hitter.
For three years of her high school career, Southmont was Class 3A. Southmont transitioned to 2A her senior year and remains Class 2A to date. She was the starting pitcher all four years of high school. Her senior year, she set the school record for the most pitching strike outs, led the team in RBI’s and stolen bases. She also led the State of Indiana in runs scored. She was sixth in the State for Home Runs, hitting 11 her senior year. She was in the Top 10 in the State for stolen bases.
Team achievements her senior year include State Runner Up, Semi-State Champions, Regional Champions, Sectional Champions, and Montgomery County Champions.
Her outstanding Individual game? Her senior season in the 2014 Regional Championship game. She had two home runs and pitched a no-hitter. She batted 1.000 that game.
Her outstanding individual season? Her senior season she batted an average of .504, On base percentage: .547 Hits: 58 RBI: 39 Runs: 59 Fielding Percentage: .892 Stolen bases: 32 Strike outs: 302.
College participation: McKenzi played softball for three years at the University of Southern Indiana.
She is currently a second grade teacher. She enjoys hanging out with her family, going to the park, and going on walks. She also teaches a Sunday School class at her church.
Devon Burton, 2014 Graduate, 2022 Inductee
Devon is the son of Greg and Sheila Burton. He is a 2014 graduate of Southmont. He earned his B. S. in Communication from Indiana University Kokomo, with a Minor in Sports Management.
Football - lettered all four (4) years; was named to the 1st Team All Sagamore Conference as a senior and sophomore; was named Journal & Courier Mr. Comeback Player of the Year as a junior; was named to the All County Team by the Journal Review and The Paper of Montgomery County as a junior; was named to the All County Team and the All Underclassman Team as a freshman. As a senior, Devon was voted the MVP. He was selected Captain as a senior and junior. As a junior, the Southmont coaches named him the Top Defensive Back and Top Offensive Back. In 2012 as a junior, he passed for 602 yards with five (5) touchdowns, and ran for 941 Yards with twelve (12) touchdowns. He only played in 7-10 games due to a severe injury. As a sophomore, he was selected as the Most Outstanding Receiver.
Basketball - lettered three years (10, 11, 12); as a senior, Devon was named to the Journal & Courier All Area Team Honorable Mention. He was selected to play in the Battle of the Boarders All Star Game. Devon was voted MVP and Captain as a senior and junior. He scored 18 points his first game back after recovering from a broken leg his senior season in football.
As a junior in 2013, Devon was named to the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association Top 100 Underclassmen in the State of Indiana. He was also named to the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association Honorable Mention Team. Devon was named the Sugar Creek Classic MVP; Journal & Courier All Area Team; 1st Team All-Sagamore Conference; Journal Review Basketball Player of the Year; 1st Team All County; The Paper of Montgomery County Basketball Player of the Year. Devon had the Most Team Steals setting a school record (71). He scored 514 points and had 128 assists. He scored 35 points against Fountain Central (season high) and was 7 for 10 from the three-point line.
As a sophomore, Devon was named 2nd Team All-Sagamore Conference and 1st Team All County. He led the team in steals and free throw percentage with 77%. He had twelve games with 20+ points. He scored 394 total points that season. His 908 Points scored between his sophomore and junior seasons was the second most points ever scored in two seasons at Southmont High School. Devon was a 1,000 Point Scorer for his career at Southmont. That was accomplished in two years and six games (sophomore, junior, and senior).
Devon earned Scholar Athlete as a junior and senior.
Track & Field - lettered two years (9, 11); as a junior, he was part of the 4x200 Meter Relay that finished second at the Hoosier Indoor State Relays. He was a Regional Qualifier in the Long Jump (21’ 3”), in the 4x100 Meter Relay; and in the 4x400 Meter Relay. He earned 1st Team All Sagamore Conference in the Long Jump. Devon earned 2nd Team All-Conference in the 4x100 Meter Relay. He also won County Championships as a junior in the Long Jump, 100 Meter Dash, and 4x100 Meter Relay. Also that season he was named the Most Outstanding Jumper by his coaches. As a freshman, Devon earned 1st Team All Sagamore Conference by winning the Long Jump.
Teams that Devon played on included the Sagamore Conference Football Team Champions in 2010 and 2011; the Montgomery County Team Champions in 2010, 2011, and 2013. As a junior, he led his basketball team to the Sugar Creek Classic Championship. This was the first Classic Championship in school history. He also led Southmont to the Montgomery County Team Championship as a senior. Also as a junior, he helped lead the track and field team to the Sagamore Conference Championship in 2013.
College participation: Devon attended Ancilla University during 2014-2015. He transferred to Indiana University at Kokomo from 2015 – 2017. He was voted Team Captain 2016 – 2017. His career high of 18 points came against Cincinnati Christian University
He is currently a Senior Supervisor at Wabash National. He enjoys watching and playing sports, attending University of Illinois football and basketball games.
Clint Williams, 1990 Graduate, 2022 Inductee
Clint is the son of Glenn and Janet Williams and the late Sharon Williams. He is married to LeeAnn. They have two children, Kinsey (20) and Kole (18). He attended Vincennes University from 1990-1992. He moved on to Indiana State University earning his B.S. in Education. Purdue University is where he earned his Master’s Degree in Educational Administration.
Football - 9th Grade; Football Manager 10th Grade; Montgomery County Champions as freshmen.
Basketball – lettered three years (10, 11, 12); As a junior, Clint was named to the All Sectional Honorable Mention Team. He was also named to the All Sagamore Conference First Team and as a junior to the Second Team. As a senior and a junior, Clint was named to the All Montgomery County Team. He was selected Most Valuable Player as a junior and Most Complete Player as a senior. He was chosen as a Team Captain for both his senior and junior seasons. As a senior, Clint earned the Hustle Award and Mental Attitude Awards respectively. His junior season, Clint was the team leader in points (11.0 ave.), rebounds (9.6/game), Shooting Percentage (52.5%), and Free Throw Percentage (72.2%). As a senior, he led the team in rebounds and had a high game of 22 points against Crawfordsville. Clint had multiple double –doubles his junior and senior seasons.
Track and Field – lettered all four years; Sagamore Conference Team Champions as a sophomore and freshman. As a senior, Clint was a State Qualifier in the 300 Meter Low Hurdles finishing in 7th place. He was the Sectional Champion in both the 110 Meter High Hurdles and the 300 Meter Low Hurdles as a senior. He earned First Team All Sagamore Conference as a senior in the 300 Meter Low Hurdles. He tied the school records for the 110 Meter High Hurdles with a 14.7 seconds and the 300 Meter Low Hurdles with a 38.6 seconds. As a junior and senior, he was the Montgomery County Champion in the Long Jump, 110 Meter High Hurdles and 300 Meter Low Hurdles. As a senior, Clint tied the Montgomery County Record in the 110 Meter High Hurdles and 300 Meter Low Hurdles. As a sophomore, he earned First Team All Sagamore Conference in the 4x400 Meter Relay.
Awards earned by Clint included Most Valuable Athlete, Mental Attitude Award, Most Individual Points Scored Award, and was voted a Team Captain as a senior. As a junior and sophomore, he earned the Most Improved Athlete Award. His freshman season he was awarded the Outstanding Freshman Award. Upon graduation, Clint earned the James S. Tribby Scholar Athlete Scholarship.
College Participation: Clint attended Vincennes University. He competed and earned two varsity letters for his competition. He was a Regional Qualifier in the 110 Meter High Hurdles and 400 Meter Intermediate Hurdles. He earned Dean’s List three semesters. Clint transferred to Indiana State University after two years at Vincennes. There he competed for the Sycamores from 1992-1994 earning two varsity letters. He helped the Sycamores to the Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Team Championship in 1994. He was voted a Team Captain as a senior at ISU. Academic Honors included Tri Kappa Honorary Member (Health Education Academic Honors). At ISU he earned the Dean’s List five semesters. Clint earned his Bachelors of Science Degree in Education from ISU and his Masters of Science Education Administration from Purdue University.
He has served as a teacher, coach, Athletic Director and Administrator in the McCutcheon School District for many years. He enjoys outdoor activities, spending time with family, and sports. Other things he enjoys are volunteering at church, coaching basketball, volleyball, and track and field for the last 28 years.
He got his start by coaching 7th and 8th grade boys’ basketball for two years at Southmont leading them to a Sagamore Conference Tournament Championship and Avon Tournament Championship. In addition, he was an assistant varsity track and field coach at Southmont High School for two years.
Doug Lewis, 1991 Graduate, 2022 Inductee
Doug is the son of John and Deb Lewis. He is married to Jennifer. They have four children, Gavin Hill (24), JC Lewis (- 20), Will Lewis (19) and Peyton Lewis (15).
Football – lettered three years (10, 11, 12); Doug was a member of the Sectional Runner Up Team of 1989. During his senior season, Doug was named 1st Team All Sagamore Conference. Also, he was named to the All West Central Indiana Football Team, and he was a Team Captain. A highlight of his football career was defeating West Lafayette as a junior, finishing 6-5 with a runner Up finish in the Sectional Championship after being winless the year before. He was also selected the Outstanding Defensive and Offensive Lineman by his coaches. Doug was chosen the Outstanding Football Student-Athlete.
Baseball – lettered four years (9, 10, 11, 12); as a senior and junior, Doug was named to the All Sectional Team. As a senior, he was named 1st Team All Sagamore Conference, and the Journal Review Player of the Year. He also was voted the MVP as a senior. He won awards for Most RBI’S (27), Highest Batting Average (.377), and Most Home Runs (11). As a junior he received the award for Most RBI’S (19).
As a sophomore, Doug was named 2nd Team All Sagamore Conference, and was voted MVP. He led the team with the Most RBI’S (24). As a freshman he was voted Rookie of the Year.
Doug was a member of the Sectional Championship Team of 1988, and that team finished as the Regional Runner Up. As a senior, his 1991 team completed their season as the Sectional Runner Up. That team finished with 17 wins. He was voted a Team Captain.
Records and rankings held by Doug upon graduation were Home Runs for a Season (11), Career (19); RBI’S for a Season (27), Career (70); 2nd in Career Batting Average (.306); 2nd in Career Doubles (15); and 3rd in Career Hits (74).
College Participation: Doug played football and baseball his freshman year at Wabash College. He made the travel squad for both teams. After his freshman year, he started his coaching career at Southmont in football, basketball, and baseball.
He graduated from Wabash College as a history major. He attended Indiana Wesleyan for his Master’s in Education with a Principal’s Endorsement. He earned his Superintendent’s License from Indiana State University.
Doug has been a teacher, coach and administrator since college. He is currently the Principal at White River Valley High School. He has been in school administration for seventeen years. He enjoys coaching his kids, traveling with his wife, hunting, and cooking BBQ.
Doug has coached football, baseball, and basketball at multiple levels and schools in his career.
Rick French, 1973 Graduate, 2022 Inductee
Rick is a 1973 graduate of Southmont. He is the son of Robert French and Mary Ann Newell French Davis. Rick is married to Charlene Renner French. He is the father of Erin French Jones and Travis French. Erin is a teacher in the Southmont School System, and Travis lives in McAllen, Texas. His hobbies and other interests include the Chicago Cubs, golf, hunting, fishing, writing and the Stock Market.
Golf – lettered as a freshman
Cross Country – lettered as a sophomore
Basketball – lettered three years (10, 11 12); 10th was at New Market; during his career, Rick was named All Sectional, All Wabash River Conference, and All Montgomery County. He was selected a Team Captain. Rick held several school records upon graduation. As a senior, Rick averaged 18 points per game which was a school record. He scored 394 points as a senior, a school record. His high game of 31 points once again a school record. As a sophomore at New Market High School, he set the Assists Record for a Single Game with 11.
Outstanding performances include being the first player at Southmont to score 30 or more points in a single game (once with 31 and once with 30.)
Baseball – lettered at Southmont two years (11, 12); selected All Wabash River Conference. Voted a Team Captain and was invited to the Pittsburgh Pirates tryouts. He graduated with several school records. Highest Batting Average (.432), Most Hits in a Season (38), Most Stolen Bases in a Season (11), and Most Assists in a Season (41). He had 38 hits as a senior.
Rick was a coach at Southmont for eleven seasons. He was a Varsity Assistant Baseball coach six years helping the Mounties to win one Sectional Championship and that team was a Regional Finalist. His coaching career also included a single year as Varsity Assistant for Boys’ Basketball. He also served a year as Varsity Assistant Volleyball Coach. Rick also coached Freshman Volleyball and 7th Grade Girls’ Basketball for two years.
Other interesting information about Rick includes being named the Cleveland Ohio HBA Associate of the Year and the Cleveland Ohio HBA Presidential Award of Merit. He officiated the Women’s Olympic Basketball Team Tryouts at Purdue University. He was a past president of the Fraternal Order of Police. He is a Certified Trainer at the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy and a published author of two books, All Along and The Dark Side, Life Behind the Badge.
Rick was a member of the Indiana State Police Olympic Basketball Team. He played in the International Police Olympics held in NYC in 1980. He was a member of the Indiana State Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) Basketball Champions in 1987. He was the Indiana State FOP MVP 1987. Rick also provided the basketball color commentary for WCVL Radio for 1991-1992.
Jason Kelsey, 2006 Graduate, 2022 Inductee
Jason is the son of Marvin and Nettie Kelsey. He is married to Ashley. They have two children, Tyson (12) and Easton (11).
Wrestling – lettered all four (4) years; placed 8th at the 2006 State Meet; qualified for the Semi-State four (4) times; two time Regional Champion; three time Sectional Champion; two time Sagamore Conference Champion; two time County Champion; two time Crawfordsville 8-Way Champion; three times finished 5-0 at the WEBO Duals; captain as a junior and senior; 109-27 career record
His best performance in a match was in the first round at the State Meet with a 9-6 victory.
His best season was 2005-2006. He set the individual school weight class record of 34-5.
Another highlight of his career was being invited to represent Team Indiana at a tournament in Delaware.
Currently, Jason is an operator at Steel Dynamics. He enjoys hunting, camping and coaching.
Jake Sandusky, 2000 Graduate, 2022 Inductee
Jake is the son of Sandra Keck and the late Robert Sandusky. He graduated from Methodist University majoring in Business Concentration in Golf Management.
Golf - lettered all four (4) years, Co-MVP his senior year, 1st Team All Sagamore Conference as a junior and senior, Conference Tournament Champion his junior and senior years (73, 70), Match Medalist nine (9)times, Second best average two (2) years with 78.2 his junior year, All-State Andy Skodinski led him with a 77 average. A 78 average his senior year right behind Garrett Cook at 77.
Team Accomplishments
During Jake’s four (4) years, his teams qualified for the State Finals each year - finishing 14th, 5th, 13th and 11th. They also were undefeated in matches three (3) years and only lost one (1) match in all four (4) years with a 56-1 record. His teams won two (2) Sectionals, and two (2) Regional Runners-up, the Conference Tournament three (3) years, the County title all four (4) years, and seven (7) Invitationals. A total of twelve (12) tournaments!
As a sophomore Jake shot 77 in the Sectional to help win and set the school’s team record score for 18 holes at 291 and his senior year shot 35 in a dual meet as medalist that also set the school team record for a 9-hole match at 141.
He is currently a Teaching PGA Professional in Colorado. He enjoys playing the piano, working out and cooking. During his career, he has taught PGA Tour players, Matt Kuchar and Hunter Mahan. Jake also trades his own portfolio of financial investments.

Kevin Stewart, 2022 Coach Inductee
Kevin has been married to Janice for 48 years. They are the proud parents of two adult children. Renee Lambermont is an attorney for Claumet Products in Indianapolis. Kyle Stewart is a Project Engineer for Thompson Thrift Development.
Kevin is a 1973 graduate of Turkey Run High School. He graduated from Indiana State University in 1977. He began his teaching/coaching career in the fall of 1977 at Southmont High School. He earned his Master’s Degree and post graduate degree in Secondary Education Administration from Indiana State University also.
His team’s achievements while at Turkey Run included Parke County Champions in football all four years, won the Covered Bridge Trophy, Sectional champion in baseball as a sophomore, Wabash River Conference champions as a junior with a 14-2 record.
Individual athletic achievements while in high school included earning three letters in football and WRC All-Conference as a senior, lettering two years in basketball and WRC All Conference as a senior, lettering three years in baseball, and lettering one year in track and field setting the school record in the discus throw.
Career: Teacher of Industrial Arts at Southmont for twenty years. He then became the assistant principal at Southmont for six years. After that he was named the principal at Southmont for the next thirteen years. He retired from Southmont in 2016.
He was named the District 4 Principal of the Year in 2008. That year he was also nominated by the Indiana Association of School Principals for the entire State of Indiana.

Coach Stewart coached junior high and freshman football from 1977-1984 and New Market Elementary basketball from 1979-1983. He was a junior high track and field coach from 1977-1980. He was a varsity assistant track coach from 1981-1983.

Max is married to Lora. They have three adult children, Charlene (Barry) Brown, Darla (Rudy) Hohenstein, Jeffrey (Susie) Nichols. They have nine grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren, ages 16 down to a few weeks old.
He is currently retired from farming and driving a school bus but still active in the real estate business.
He graduated from Alamo High School in 1957. He lettered in basketball, baseball, and track and field. In 1957 Alamo won the Montgomery County Basketball Team Championship.
Career: Max is/was a farmer. He still is involved in the Real Estate business. He was the top real estate listing salesman for two years (1993-1994). He drove a school bus for 40 years and enjoyed working with students. Max was the Fire Chief for Ripley Township Volunteer Fire Department for 42 years. He served as an EMT for 45 years. For 16.5 years, he served on the South Montgomery School Board.
Memorable Moments: “Getting married, having our first child, having our first grandchild, and having our first great-grandchild.” Max likes to tell people that, “I have been in training for 63 years, and I am NOT trained yet!”
Why is Southmont athletics so important to you: “I have always loved sports. My son and daughters were in sports at Southmont. Six of my grandchildren were all in sports at Southmont. We followed them all throughout high school and college.”
