WILLIAMSPORT — Southmont’s boys basketball team went into overtime for the third time in its last four games before pulling out a 46-40 win over Seeger Wednesday night in a makeup game.
Coming off a thrilling overtime win over Crawfordsville on Saturday, the Mounties had the ball with the score tied at 38 but failed to get a shot off in the final 18 seconds to send the game into overtime.
In the extra session the Mounties (4-12) took the lead for good at 41-40 with 59 seconds to play on the first of two free throws by Logan Oppy. He also hit his second free the to give the Mounties a 42-40 lead before upping that lead to 44-40 by hitting two more free throws with 32 seconds to play. Reese Long iced the game with more free throws.
Southmont was able to ice the game away from he foul line hitting 8-of-10 in the extra session after making just 6-of-13 in regulation.
“We had to overcome a lot of adversity, some self-imposed, and some not,” Southmont coach Jake Turner said. “We came in without Carson (Chadd) and Cale (Hess) and then Austin (Bowman) twisted his ankle in the first quarter. We had people in foul trouble so we had to have a lot of people step up.”
The Mounties were led by Avery Saunders’ 16 points, despite missing the entire second quarter due to foul trouble. Drew Glancy added eight and Bowman and Oppy each added six.
“I really hope playing these tight, close games is preparing us for the stretch run and the sectional,” Turner said. “You have to be able to win close games come sectional time.”
The Mounties were able to make halftime adjustments and that was the key according to Turner.
“The (Owen) Snedeker kid was killing us at halftime,” he said. “He may be a freshman but he is very good and he had like 13 of their 20 points at half. We really cracked down on him and Oppy did a great job as that was his assignment for most of the half. We also challenged our team to do better on the boards and they did.”
Southmont will face Lebanon on Friday in a boy/girls doubleheader and Turner feels his team can compete with anyone from here on out.
Seeger, which had won five of six games since the start of the new year, fell to 8-7.
“It’s all about playing hard and focus,” he said. “I have had coaches and officials come and tell me they are impressed in how hard we play. Those are the games we have either won or competed in. If we do that we can beat anyone on our schedule from here on out.”
