Museum is place to be in December

Posted

The busy month of December is already here! Can you believe it?

At the Carnegie Museum, there is a lot to see and do this month. Crawfordsville Community Schools K-12 Art Extravaganza continues. Middle and high school art is on display through Dec. 16. Kindergarten through fifth grade art is on display through the end of the year. Bring your out-of-town family to see the art! We have some talented artists here.

Now through Feb. 28, 2024, our fall exhibit Unequal and Undaunted: Education and Community of Lincoln School for Colored Children tells the story of the forgotten Lincoln Schools in Crawfordsville.

In addition, this Saturday, we’ve invited Santa and Mrs. Claus to join us for family photos from 2:30-4:30 p.m. Bring your camera and take pictures with Santa. This time with Santa is not only for kids; it can be a great time to bring the whole family together for a photo with Santa and his sleigh. Winter-themed craft stations will be available throughout the museum. All ages are welcome. This event is free and open to the public.

The Carnegie Museum will offer additional activities throughout the month. On Dec. 16, families can make snowflake ornaments. Stomp rockets will be featured on December 23 and 27-30. All activities are on demand from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Winter backdrops and photo props will also be available all month long for additional holiday photo opportunities.

Looking for a gift for someone special (or those friends who “already have everything”)? Visit the CMMC gift shop for local authors’ publications including the recent “Ghosts and Legends of Crawfordsville, Indiana” by our own Christina (and Christopher) Hunt – you may even request Christie to autograph your book at the library. We also have pre-made items produced by our 3-D printer, or if you feel crafty, talk to us about submitting your own design.

Finally, you may buy or renew a membership to the CMMC. Did you know that by joining the Carnegie Museum of Montgomery County as a member, you receive free admission to other museums that participate in the ASTC Passport program? For just $30 per household, your money will stay in the county while improving our local museum, and your family can visit other participating science and technology centers — free! Among the program participants are Chicago’s Field Museum of Natural History, The Adler Planetarium, and the Museum of Science and Industry, and that’s just Chicago! Some exclusions apply. For more information, check out the ASTC passport program details at https://www.astc.org/membership/. If you have questions about membership in the CMMC, please contact the Carnegie Museum at 765-362-4618.

The Carnegie Museum is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. Additional tours by appointment only. Admission is free.

Janna Bennett is the Carnegie Museum of Montgomery County Curator.
