Fountain Central baseball a year ago went 7-16. A year before in 2021 they went 13-15. The 2023 Mustangs are hoping they can get back to playing more consistent baseball as they begin the season.
Too often a season ago FC gave up double-digit run games which made it hard for them at times as they gave up an average of nine runs a game. This season FC will look to change their fortune.
The Mustangs return their top three hitters form a year ago in junior Owen Acton, senior Luke Foxworthy, and junior Kyle Slinker. Acton batted .373 last season and led the FC with 22 RBI’s and 27 runs scored. Foxworthy hit .348 with Slinker right behind him at .344. Foxworthy led the team with 24 hits with Slinker joining Acton and Brayden Prickett with 22 each.
Part of the reason for the struggles last year for the Mustangs came from their fielding miscues. Of the 213 runs that were scored against the Mustangs a season ago, just 116 of them were earned by the pitching staff. 79 total errors (3.4 per game) were made by FC.
With a new-look sectional this season the Mustangs will see some familiar WRC foes in the Class A Sectional. The tournament features the likes of Attica, Covington, North Vermillion, Riverton Parke, and state power and the No. 1 ranked team in the Class A pre-season poll in Lafayette Central Catholic.
The Mustangs began their season Monday with a trip to Riverton Parke and will host the Panthers for another match up today.
