Everything came together for Fountain Central girls tennis in 2022 as they had one of the most successful season’s in school history. FC went 16-2 overall record along with being named Bi-County and WRC champions and winning the school’s first sectional title since 2017.

This season the roster for the Mustangs will feature 18 players with 12 of them being freshman. Longtime FC coach David Kight notes how the focus has been getting his new players up to speed at the high school level.

“Our focus this early in the season is just hit as many balls as we can in practice,” he said. “Lots of feeding, hitting, and plenty of time for instruction from the coaches so we are really trying to acclimate them to how we do things in practice. Even though most of them were with us in middle school, this is their first experience with me as their coach. We had excellent attendance for our conditioning sessions before practices started so we feel like we are in good tennis playing shape already and will continue to work on that.”

FC will have to replace a couple of key spots from their team a year ago. 2022 Journal Review Player of the Year and No. 1 singles player Lillie Fishero who went 22-1 along with three singles player Angela Gonzalez. The third senior from last year’s team came at one doubles from Emily Jiminez.

“We’ve had really good leadership from players like Marlee Muniz who will be our lone senior this year,” Kight added. “I also expect big things from Haley Webb who has been a good vocal leader and led by example.”

Webb will be a junior this year as well as Kendall Eberly. Alydia Mellady and Hannah Prickett both saw varsity action their freshman season a year ago and will be counted on again as sophomores.

The Mustangs goals are simple as they want again this season to defend their WRC and sectional crowns.

They begin their season next Monday when they host Covington in a sectional championship re-match.
