Posted

VEEDERSBURG — Fountain Central girls basketball opening week of the season couldn’t have started much better. Saturday the Mustangs concluded their three-game home stand by hosting the Frankfort Hot Dogs at Dave Sanders Court. After securing wins over Faith Christian and Clinton Prairie earlier in the week, FC improved to 3-0 on the year with a 40-22 win over the Hot Dogs.

FC jumped out a 19-7 lead after a quarter then things got a little sloppy for both squads with just nine total points being scored in the second as FC took a 25-10 lead into halftime. Thankfully the Mustangs had their strong, reliable defense to lean on and the Hot Dogs didn’t’ do themselves any favors either in the turnover department. When all was tallied Frankfort turned the ball over 30 times while FC had 20 of their own. Even with the turnovers, Mustang coach Sam Karr was content with being 3-0.

“We had two very hard fought wins this week,” he said. “This game I did feel like we played the worst we had of the three. Even then we still win by 18. Games like this give me motivation for practice. Our practices next week will be great and they need to be because the schedule gets even tougher.”

The Mustangs for the game shot 15-55 (27%)  from the floor and just 6-23 (26%) from three. They made 4-7 shots from the foul line and grabbed 30 rebounds. Freshman Henley Good continues to shine for the Mustangs as she led all scorers in the game with 19 points. Rylee Simko added six, Hannah Prickett five, both KayLee Spragg and Aubrey Ashwill four while Katie Brown scored two.

Frankfort (0-2) ended the night shooting 9-28 (32%) from the floor and just 1-7 from three. They made just 3-14 (21%) shots from the foul line. Ella McAtee led the Hot Dogs with nine points with Saira Flores chipping in eight, Vannessa Guardado four and Evelyn Vasquez-Bautista scored one.

Karr continued to praise Good who has stepped in and made an immediate impact.

“She’s un-afraid and shes’ confident” Karr said of Good. “She’s a special player and all three of our freshman have and will continue to contribute for us. It’s kind of Henley’s team right now and normally you don’t say that about most freshman, but she’s doing everything we ask of her and I couldn’t be more happy for her.”

The 3-0 Mustangs as Karr alluded to will begin to see more difficult schedule next week. All three of their games will be on the road it starts with a trip to 2-0 Clinton Central on Tuesday. Friday FC will travel to take Lafayette Jeff who they’ve added to their schedule this season. Saturday afternoon they’ll conclude the week against Rossville.
