Nancy S. Pearson, 79, of Veedersburg passed away at 4:05 a.m. Friday, Dec. 29, 2023, at Franciscan Health East in Lafayette.

Nancy was born July 17, 1944, at Fountain (Portland Arch), Indiana, the daughter of the late James E. and Leah B. (Kaler) Sanders. She also is preceded in death by siblings, Patricia Hambright and John Michael Sanders.

Nancy grew up on a farm that is now part of the Portland Arch Nature Preserve. She attended elementary school in Shawnee Township; the first four grades were in a two-room school house. She graduated from Covington High School in 1961 and went on to earn her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in elementary education at Indiana State University.

It was in high school where she met Bob Pearson, and they soon became high school sweethearts. They dated for six years before they were married Aug. 9, 1964, at the First Church of Christ in Covington. Bob preceded her in death July 28, 2021.

Nancy taught for 33 years at Southeast Fountain School Corporation before retiring in 2001. She taught fourth grade at the old high school building in Veedersburg before the school moved to its current location. She eventually taught fifth grade and was the computer coordinator for the building the last 13 years before her retirement. She was a member of Sterling Christian Church in Veedersburg.

Bob and Nancy had one son, Alan Wayne Pearson. He died in a car accident Oct. 29, 1992.

Surviving family include: daughter-in-law Cheryl (David) Bolding; three grandchildren, Andrew (Jessica) Pearson, Julia (Shannon) Eicher and Joshua (Carolyn) Pearson; eight great-grandchildren; brother Charles E. “Gene” (Betty) Sanders, Covington; and sister Dr. Beverly Jean Sanders, Carrboro, North Carolina.

A funeral service will take place at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 4 at Sterling Christian Church, 701 S. Sterling Ave., Veedersburg, with Pastors Gary Johnson and Jason Davis officiating. Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 4 at the church and continues until time of service. Burial will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Covington.
