North and South runners compete at 49th Annual Charger Classic

LINDEN — It was a hot one for the 49th Annual Charger Classic cross country meet at North Montgomery on Thursday evening.

So hot, officials pushed back the start time to 7:15 p.m. and ran the boys and girls races together.

Faith Allen didn’t care about the heat though, and it the showed. The Southmont freshman cruised to the finish line in 20:06 to place fourth overall amongst girls, as her time continues to drop each race in her first varsity campaign.

“I started out at like a 21:30, and the next meet I dropped 45 seconds, and this meet I dropped another 30 seconds,” Allen said. “I didn’t die, I just ran my race and tried not to think about how hot it was so it didn’t distract me.”

With only four runners, the Mounties didn’t place as a team in the girl’s portion. Megan Scheidler was 49th in 28:01, while Jane Scheidler placed 61st in 30:37, and Sophie Reimondo 67th in 31.38.

On the boy’s side, Southmont placed 8th, paced by Aaron Evans’ 25th place finish in 19:47. Skyler Wood was 55th in 21:38, Beck McIntyre 58th in 21:59, and Connor Keller 75th in 23:08. Austin Smothers was 82nd in 23:42, while Gerald Hutson was 83rd in 24:06, and Toby Casteel 89th in 25:17.

“All of my young kids actually crushed their goals,” Southmont coach Courtny Cotten said. “So they had some season goals that they wanted to hit, and they’ve already hit those. So now it’s looking at what’s the next goal and setting another benchmark and trying to hit that goal. I’m really happy with the progression of the young kids.”

North Montgomery’s top finisher in the boy’s race was Elijah McCartney, who placed 13th in 18:55. The sophomore has already seen his time’s drop below his best mark from his freshman season.

“I’ve gotten a lot faster from last year,” he said. “We’ve done a lot more training.”

McCartney said it felt good to show off his home course.

“It was good to make a show and try the best you can,” he said.

Dakota Scott was 51st for the Chargers in 21:22, while Treyce Pittman placed 77th in 23:14, KC Isbell was 88th in 25:16, and Adam Coon 96th in 26:25. The Chargers placed 9th as a team.

North Montgomery’s girls placed 7th, led by Claire Bonwell’s 31st place finish in a time of 25:18. Sarah Brown was 55th in 28:34, Lydia LaChance 58th in 29:16, Mackenzie Stage 65th in 30:56, and Hannah Littell 68th in 32:04.
