North Montgomery school board members received a report Monday from business manager Jim McBee about the progress of two major projects.
The locker room project at the high school is complete except for a handful of punch list items. The middle school roofing project hit some hurdles, but is expected to be completed soon.
Boys basketball, boys swimming and wrestling now have their own locker rooms. The girls varsity locker room will house the girls basketball and volleyball teams. The girls swimming team will have their own locker room. There are separate boys and girls physical education locker rooms.
The locker rooms had not been updated since the building was constructed in 1971. Superintendent Dr. Colleen Moran said she didn’t realize the need for upgrading the locker rooms until recently.
“I had not been into a locker room until a couple of years ago,” Moran said. “When I walked in, I saw it was way past time to do something with them.”
The boys and girls basketball locker rooms each have a team meeting area with a big screen television, smart board and cushioned chairs for players. Each player locker stall has a small locker box for the players’ valuables, and space to hang clothes and uniforms.
McBee also announced the school will solicit bids to light the varsity soccer field with work to be done before the next school year. The field also will be moved approximately 30 feet to the west so larger bleachers can be added.
Sommer Elementary School’s student council was showcased at the meeting. Council members talked about activities they do for their school. They recently sponsored a Kids Against Hunger meal packaging event. They also made videos teaching younger students how to properly behave on a school bus and in the playground.
Sommer fifth-grader Milly Stine was the honorary school board member.
The board gave approval to McBee to apply for a grant to purchase an electric school bus.
In other business, the board:
• Approved the resignations of high school instructional assistant Sadie Corwin and administrative assistant/bookkeeper Tricia Nelson at Pleasant Hill Elementary.
• Approved the hiring of Danielle Hernandez, Sommer Elementary special educational assistant and Staci Duncan, middle school special services.
