Record crowds attended the GNCC races at Ironman Raceway for the Ironman GNCC event. The fact one of the factory teams, Yamaha, was in town provided an extra bonus for North Montgomery elementary schools.
Yamaha recently announced that the three North Montgomery elementary schools, Sommer, Sugar Creek and Pleasant Hill, were selected to receive a $27,000 grant for the All Kids Bike program. The program includes an eight-week curriculum designed to teach kindergarten students how to ride bicycles. Bikes and helmets are also provided to each school for the kindergarten physical education class.
Yamaha team members and riders visited Pleasant Hill Elementary on Monday to announce the program to kindergarten students. The team presented the 25 Strider Bikes which the students will use at the school along with a $9,000 check.
Students were able to ride the balance bikes with the assistance from Yamaha team members.
The balance bikes, which were assembled by Yamaha team members at the racetrack during Ironman weekend, have no pedals which help students learn how to balance. Once a student has balancing perfected, pedals will be added.
“It was so cool to have the Yamaha people to help present the program to our students,” Pleasant Hill principal Jennifer Moseley. “Having the bikes put together this weekend at Ironman made it even better. Several of our students had visited the races over the weekend.”
Sommer and Sugar Creek elementaries also will receive bikes for the program, which is scheduled to begin after the holidays.
