Pacers offense is elite and exciting

Posted
If you like defense, you might need to go back and watch some VHS tapes from the 1990’s. If you like offense, come out to Gainbridge Fieldhouse and watch the Pacers this season.

The NBA as a whole is filled with offensive firepower these days. Teams typically have five guys that can shoot on the floor at all times. The speed of the game is unmatched, and you’ll see games scored in the 120’s or higher on most nights. You may be tempted to think “they don’t play defense in the NBA.” But the truth is, it may appear that way because the offense is so good.As for the Pacers, they could definitely use some help on the defensive end. They’re giving up the most points in the paint in the entire NBA. They’re ranked 26th or worse in defensive rating and other metrics. Even with Myles Turner and newcomer Bruce Brown, the Pacers have struggled to guard the opposition. The numbers are slightly skewed since they gave up 155 points to Boston in one game. But if you take that game away, the Pacers would still be struggling.Offense, on the other hand, is another story. Led by Tyrese Haliburton, this offense is elite and very exciting to watch. They lead the entire NBA in offensive rating, and are fourth in effective FG%. They tied a franchise record with 152 points in the win over San Antonio on Monday night, and routinely put up 60 or even 70 point halves. And yes, rookie phenom Victor Wembanyama was in town on Monday. I can confirm, he’s tall. But the Fieldhouse was amped up because of this exciting offense, and how fun it is to watch.Head Coach Rick Carlisle loves what he sees on the offensive end: ”This is the message we want to send to each other every night.. that we're all completely selfless and we share the ball.”Tyrese Haliburton agrees: “The ball is moving well. I think we are just playing the right way. It's an exciting time for us offensively. We're probably last on defense.. the Boston game hurt. We just have to get it going on that end.”This team plays fast (2nd in Pace in the NBA.) They play together (2nd in Assist % in the NBA). This team has balance (9 players averaging 8+ points per game.) And they simply know how to score (1st in the NBA.)  If this team can even become a middle of the road type of defense, they can really make some noise in the Eastern Conference. That’s the challenge for Rick Carlisle and the coaching staff. For now, you can be assured of one thing: If you make it out to a Pacers game this season, you’re going to be highly entertained.
