Property tax season underway in Montgomery County

Essential information for homeowners

Posted

Property tax statements for Montgomery County were mailed on April 13, giving homeowners ample time to review their bills and prepare for upcoming payment deadlines. As the spring due date approaches, residents are encouraged to take proactive steps to avoid penalties and ensure timely payment.

The deadline to pay Fall property taxes without penalty is Nov. 10.

Property tax statements are essential documents that outline the amount owed and provide payment coupons for both the spring and fall installments. These statements are designed to help taxpayers clearly understand their obligations and deadlines.

“Being informed about your property tax obligations is essential,” said Heather Laffoon, Montgomery County Treasurer. “We want to make it as easy as possible for residents to understand their statements and meet their deadlines.”

Understanding Your Tax Statement

All property owners should expect to receive a tax statement, even if their balance is zero or their taxes are paid through an escrow account. Statements marked “in escrow” indicate that a mortgage company is responsible for payment, and no action is required from the homeowner.

Residents can review parcel details and current balances online through the county’s official website or the Beacon property search tool. These resources provide up-to-date information to help taxpayers stay informed throughout the payment cycle.

Property taxes play a vital role in funding local services, including schools, law enforcement, fire departments and libraries.

Dog Tax Reminder for Residents

As property tax season gets underway, Montgomery County officials are reminding residents that dog owners are required to pay a county dog tax each year. This ordinance, enacted in December 2006, applies to all dogs over six months of age.

Dog owners are assessed $5 per dog, with a maximum of $30 per household. Kennel owners pay $30 for one to six dogs and $50 for seven or more. These funds directly support animal control services, claim reimbursements, and canine research and education within the county.

“Many residents don’t realize the dog tax is due during the same time as property taxes,” said Heather Laffoon, Montgomery County Treasurer. “It’s important to take care of both at the same time to stay in compliance and support these essential services.”

Dog tax payments can be made alongside property tax payments, making it convenient for residents to fulfill both obligations at once.

Exploring Payment Options

Homeowners have several convenient options for submitting their property tax payments:

In-Person Payments:

Payments can be made at the Montgomery County Government Center, open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The office will be closed Nov. 3 for Election Day and Nov. 11 for Veteran’s Day. Accepted forms of payment in the office include cash, checks, money orders or cashier’s checks. Credit and debit card payments will no longer be accepted in person.

Drop Box Service:

A secure drop box is available on the south side of the Government Center for added convenience. It is checked multiple times daily. Taxpayers should place payments in an envelope clearly labeled with identifying information.

Mail Payments:

Payments may be mailed to the Treasurer’s Office and must be postmarked by November 10th, 2026, to avoid penalties. Including a self-addressed stamped envelope will help ensure prompt receipt confirmation.  To ensure timely processing, taxpayers mailing their payments are strongly encouraged to have their envelopes hand-stamped at the post office. Placing a payment in a mailbox on the due date does not guarantee it will receive a same-day postmark. Payments must be officially postmarked by the U.S. Postal Service on or before the due date to avoid penalties.

Local Bank Payments:

Participating local banks — including First Financial, Hoosier Heartland, and Tri-County — will accept tax payments during the collection period. Taxpayers must bring their payment coupon for proper processing.

Online and Phone Payments:

Residents may also pay online via the county website or by phone at 1-855-276-8051 using a valid parcel number. A 2.95% service fee applies to credit or debit card payments, while e-check transactions incur a $0.95 fee.

Preparing for the Deadline

With the Nov. 10 deadline approaching, officials stress the importance of early preparation. Missing the deadline may result in penalties, adding unnecessary costs for taxpayers.

“Preparation is key,” Laffoon said. “We encourage residents to take action now to meet their financial responsibilities and avoid last-minute stress.”
