Purple Heart Parkway extension gets green light

Posted

Montgomery County Commissioners accepted a bid Monday from Crider & Crider to build the Purple Heart Parkway extension.

The bid of $5,344,598 will be split between the county and the City of Crawfordsville. The road extension will connect U.S. 231 South and Ladoga Road and is expected to open more areas for expansion in that area.

Work is scheduled to begin in April and be substantially complete by August.

“It is the county’s hope the road could be open in August,” Montgomery County Administrator Tom Klein said. “Not all the work will be complete, but the road should be complete enough to be open to traffic.”

“This is good news,” Montgomery County Commissioner John Frey said. “This goes to show you what can be accomplished when the county and city work together.”

At the city’s request, a contract with V.S. Engineering to oversee the construction of the new road also was approved.

The county received a READI funds grant from the state in the amount of $2.3 million to be paid on the project. The remaining balance of $3.1 million project will be evenly split between the county and city. The county will use American Rescue Plan Act funds to pay their half of the remaining balance after the READI funds are paid.

Montgomery County Highway Superintendent Jake Lough announced this years’ dust control program and costs. Residents and the county will split the costs. This year 300 feet of road treatment will cost $1,005; 400 feet will cost $1,340; 500 feet will cost $1,675; and 600 feet will cost $2,010. Every additional 100 feet of treated roadway will cost the resident $335.

Residents are encouraged to call the county highway department to sign up for the program.

A resolution declaring I.T. property as surplus was approved.

Commissioners also approved a resolution establishing a commissioners’ tax sale certificate for properties that are severely delinquent in property taxes. The properties will be posted with instructions how to purchase the property.
