Ramon Hamm of Crawfordsville entered his heavenly home Saturday, Jan. 4, 2020. He was at home with his family.

Born Jan. 28, 1934, at Kokomo, to Byron and Opal Deckens Hamm, they moved to Crawfordsville and Ramon graduated from Crawfordsville High School in 1952. In Ramon’s senior year, he and fellow golfer, Eddie McCallum qualified for the National Junior Golf Tournament. They selected six from each state, so it was quite a feat that two came from Crawfordsville. Ramon attended Hanover College, where he played football and golf and was a member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity.

Ramon was a PGA pro and started his golf career as assistant pro at Crawfordsville Country Club. He then moved to Lafayette Country Club. He landed the head pro job at Frankfort Country Club. He left golf and became an electronics manufacturer representative in Columbus, Ohio. After five years, he returned to golf as head pro and manager of Maplecrest Golf Course in Downers Grove, Ill. He then progressed to a teaching pro position at Briarwood Country Club in Deerfield, Ill. His favorite student was Sara Lee of Sara Lee Bakeries. He took a position with Dunlop Sporting Goods, where his territory was the state of Indiana. During this period, he and his brother, Damon, constructed and operated Turkey Run Golf Course until the mid-80s. Ramon then became the sales rep for Miracle Recreation Assoc. in Ohio and Indiana, until his retirement in 1997.

During retirement, he enjoyed helping with Jr. golf at Rocky Ridge and his 18 years at his winter home in Winter Haven, Fla. He enjoyed many good times and much golf with his buddy, Don Swarat. He was also a proud member of Woodland Heights Christian Church.

He married Rita Scaggs on Feb. 5, 1955. They had four children.

Surviving family includes: wife Rita Hamm of Crawfordsville; daughter Melinda Scattergood of Crawfordsville; son David Hamm of Crawfordsville; two brothers, Damon Hamm and Byron Hamm; four grandchildren, Aubrey Thompson, Julie Scattergood, Gregory Scattergood and David Hamm; six great-grandchildren, Kya, Ethan, Carter, Mea, Addie and Anna.

He was preceded in death by son, Ramon “Rusty” Hamm; granddaughter Sydney Hamm; and two sisters, Velma Ritter and Marjorie Vaughn.

A celebration of life is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 25 at Woodland Heights Christian Church, with visitation from noon to 2 p.m. and services at 2 p.m., led by Pastor Steve Wilke. Arrangements were entrusted to Burkhart Funeral Home.

Donations in Ramon’s memory may be made to the Montgomery County Animal Welfare League, 1104 Big Four Arch Road, Crawfordsville, IN 47933.
