Register and vote in upcoming election

Posted

The 2020 elections provide remarkable opportunities for citizens to choose leaders at national, state and local levels.

Montgomery County citizens will vote for President of the United States, Congressional Representative of the Fourth District, Indiana Governor and Lt. Governor, State Senator (S23), State Representatives H13 and H41, State Attorney General and Public Instruction.

Candidates for county judges for Superior Court 1 and 2 will be on the ballot and candidates for County Commissioners District 1 and 3 as well as three At-Large County Council members. County officials on the ballot to be elected also include Clerk, Coroner and Surveyor.

It is exceedingly important that citizens are sure they are registered and then vote on or before Election Day in November.

First, it is important to be sure you are indeed registered to vote. Go to Vote.org or type “vote.org/am-i-registered-to-vote” into your browser. It takes only about 30 seconds to enter your name, address and date of birth, and you will find out instantly if your voter registration is current. That is great!

However, if you are not current, follow the instructions to register. This is easy. Note: Deadline to register to vote is Oct. 5. What you need is a valid Indiana Driver’s License or Indiana State Identification Card, be a citizen of the United States, at least 18 years old on day of election, have lived in precinct for at least 30 days before election and not currently imprisoned after being convicted of a crime.

This year the many citizens who are eligible are encouraged to vote absentee-ballot. Having registered, then type “vote.org/absentee-ballot” into your browser, and sign yourself up to receive an absentee ballot for the November election. This only takes a few minutes. Information needed for the absentee ballot applicant includes: name, date of birth, last four digits of social security number, registration address, city, state, Zip, county and telephone number and reason to vote absentee ballot by mail. Note: all citizens age 65 and older are eligible to vote absentee.

Contact your county election board if you wish to vote by absentee ballot in person at the county or if you want your power of attorney to apply for you. If you are able to personally mark your own ballot, complete and return application so it is received by county election board at least 12 days before election day. For the Nov. 3 General Election, deadline for county to receive application is 11:59 p.m. Oct. 22.

All citizens are encouraged to do your part — register and vote!
