The Crawfordsville/Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce hosted a ribbon cutting Thursday for the Athens Saddle Club, which recently underwent a revitalization with a new board.

Board President Colleen Francis said the club’s owner reached out to her in March to ask if she knew anyone interested in buying the property.

“The next day we had a full board,” Francis said.

Since then, board members have put countless hours into repairing and restoring the property, board member Makhalea Whitehead said.

“Revitalizing it, bringing it back to what you see here today,” Whitehead said. “When we came in, there was a lot of repairs that needed to be made to make the barns, the grounds, the fencing, everything safe again, and every single one of us has been busy doing just that.”

Located at 701 E. South Blvd., the nonprofit organization focuses on educating and engaging the community through horse care and local events. Originally established in 1946, the Athens Saddle Club is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year.

The club currently has nine horses boarding at the property and is looking for additional boarders and volunteers to help maintain the grounds.
