SAC announces All-Conference teams for winter season

With the winter sports season officially in the books here in Montgomery County, the Sagamore Athletic Conference wrapped up in naming their All-Conference selections for boys and girls basketball, boys and girls swimming and diving, and wrestling. As there is every season, plenty of county athletes were recognized for their achievements. Let’s see who earned All-SAC honors this winter.

Boys Basketball

Crawfordsville senior Ethan McLemore and North Montgomery junior Kelby Harwood both were selected to the All-SAC 1st Team. McLemore led the Athenians this winter in points (11.7), assists (3.1), steals (2.6), and blocks (.6). Harwood was also the do-it-all player for the Chargers as the junior scored 12.9 points, grabbed 6.0 rebounds, dished out 3.2 assists, with a steal and half a block per game.

On the All-SAC 2nd Team, the Southmont guard duo of senior Hayden Hess and junior Vince Reimondo both earned spots. Crawfordsville’s Tyson Fuller and Alec Saidian were the two Athenians represented on the second-team. North Montgomery rounded out the second-team selections with seniors Ross Dyson and Noah Hopkins getting nods.

Girls Basketball

Southmont senior and two-time JR Girls Basketball Player of the Year DeLorean Mason highlighted the All-SAC 1st-Team for the Mounties. Mason led the SAC in scoring at 16.4 points per game and added 5.3 steals to cap off her Mountie career. North Montgomery junior Piper Ramey also made the team for the Chargers. Ramey led the Chargers this season in points (12.6), rebounds (9.5), assists (2.2), steals (1.6), and blocks (.8) as she continued to be the do-it-all player for North Montgomery.

On the All-SAC 2nd team the Mounties had senior Chloe Jenkins and Freshman Layla Gomez with North Montgomery being represented by sophomore Macee Norman and freshman Caelyn Carpenter.

Wrestling

The All-SAC teams for Wrestling are determined at the Sagamore Conference meet which was won this season by the Southmont Mounties. Southmont defeated Lebanon by a single point (217.5-216.5) for their third SAC title in the last four years. Crawfordsville placed third with 204 points with North Montgomery placing fifth with 152.

At the SAC meet the Mounties produced five SAC champions in seniors Maddox Cade (138), Marlin Williams (150), Wyatt Woodall (215), and Ayden Dickerson (285). Junior Hunter Alesi earned his title at 157. Freshman Camden Laney earned a spot on the All-SAC 2nd team for his runner-up effort at 126

Crawfordsville had three wrestlers win SAC titles with junior Taiga Koyanagi at 106, junior Braeden Hites at 165, and senior Ashton Wilson at 175. Freshman Armando Munoz at 120, and junior Landon Vaught at 138 both were runners-up and earned spots on 2nd team.

The Chargers had a pair of SAC champs with junior Nolan Yarger at 132 and freshman Dakota Glasson at 126. Senior Cale Anderson was the runner-up at 285 and earned a spot on 2nd team.

Girls Swimming

As is with wrestling , the All-SAC teams for boys and girls swimming are determined at the SAC Meet. This season’s meet saw the North Montgomery Chargers win their first SAC crown since 1993 as they held off county rival Crawfordsville with 419 points to the Athenians 409.

Both the 1st-Team and 2nd-Team All-SAC is littered with Chargers and Athenians. For 1st-Team All-SAC the 200 medley relay team of Ellie Walker, Guinevere Schmitzer-Torbert, Sophia Melevage, and Maesa Horton were SAC champions. Melevage won the 200 freestyle with Horton swimming to the title in the 50 freestyle. Marie Hesler was the SAC champion in the 500 freestyle with Melevage, Horton, Hesler, and Schmitzer-Torbert finishing first in the 200 freestyle relay. Schmitzer-Torbert was the champion in the 100 breaststroke. Walker was the runner-up in the 100 freestyle and 100 back with Melevage being the runner-up in the 100 butterfly.

North Montgomery senior and 2023-24 JR Girls Swimmer of the Year, Annabel Anderson swam to the SAC title in the 100 freestyle and sophomore Dusty Robinson was the champion in the 100 back. Where the Chargers got plenty of their points was their second-place finishes. The team of Robinson, Katelyn Woolwine, Brooklyn Kerns, and Ava Kilgour placed second in the 200 medley relay. Kylie Sankey was second in the 200 freestyle, Robinson second in the 200 IM, Anderson second in the 50 free, and Anabelle Verduin Verduin was the diving runner-up. The 400 free relay of Robinson, Sankey, Anderson and Kate Merica took second as well.

Boys Swimming

Crawfordsville boys swimming held off Danville for another SAC title by scoring 414 points to the Warriors 381. Cville won five events overall. The 200 medley relay team of Adrian Medina, Campbell Mason, Ryan Miller and 2023-24 JR Boys Swimmer of the Year Whitman Horton took first. Horton also placed first in the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly. Mason was the SAC champ in the 500 freestyle with Miller winning the SAC crown int he 100 breaststroke. The final victory for CHS came in the 400 free relay with Horton, Mason, Medina and Daniel Surface. Mason was the runner-up in the 200 IM and freshman Shawn Ewoldt was the runner-up in the 100 breaststroke.
