SAC Wrestling Preview: County teams prep for stretch run

Posted

LINDEN — The Sagamore Conference wrestling meet will get underway Saturday morning at North Montgomery High School. All three Montgomery County teams come in looking to begin their stretch runs of their respective seasons with the calendar officially flipping to January.

The biggest storyline entering the SAC meet surrounds the 23-0 Crawfordsville Athenians. CHS comes in to the SAC meet looking for their first Sagamore Conference title since 1985-86 and while the SAC meet is an individual tournament, CHS still boasts the talent to potentially break that 38 year drought. Taiga Koyanagi holds an 18-4 record at 106, Camron Teeple 16-5 at 113, freshman Armando Munoz sits 20-2 at 120 with fellow freshman Blayze Robbins 18-3 at 126. Landon Vaught is undefeated at 22-0 at 138, Kollin Moore is 15-7 at 144, Jaziel Gil-Herrera 15-7 at 150, Braeden HItes 22-0 at 165, Ashton Wilson 19-2 at 175, and Isiah McNorton rounds out the impressive record for CHS at 14-7 at 285.

Southmont of course comes in as the defending three-time SAC champions and wants this group of seniors to have a four-peat. The trio of  13-0 Wyatt Woodall at 215, 18-1 Marlin Williams at 150, and 16-3 Maddox Cade at 138 have anchored the Mountie lineup all season long.  Jeffrey Pine another Mountie senior holds a 14-5 record at 132 while Hunter Alesi is 14-5 at 157.

North Montgomery will look for a better showing than at the county meet when the Chargers were battling injury and had for forfeit four weight classes. Freshman Kadyn Cohee has stood out in a big way for the Chargers this season at 113 as he holds a record of 21-5. Fellow freshman Dakota Glasson holds a 14-9 record at 126. Nolan Yarger is one of the leaders for the Chargers in his junior year. Yarger is 18-8 on the season after bursting onto the scene a year ago as a sophomore. Junior Jayden Thompson at 157 is another leader for NM as Thompson looks for a SAC title with a record of 14-5. Senior Israel Rose is 12-6 at 190 with fellow senior Jacob Rice also leading the way at 215 with an 18-6 mark. Before the Mounties had their three-peat, the Chargers dominated the SAC winning six of eight SAC titles from 2012- 2019.

There are a handful of Montgomery county matchups in the opening round and of course could be some throughout the day as well. Cville’s Koyanagi will take on Southmont’s Cooper Scott at 106. Another Athenian and Mountie matchup will be at 126 as Robbins for CHS takes on South’s Camden Laney at 126. Woodall and Rice will square off in the opening round at 215 while McNorton for CHS will take on the Chargers Cale Anderson at 285.

Wrestling is scheduled to begin at North Montgomery at 9 a.m.
