Seniors will lead Charger girls swimming

LINDEN — North Montgomery returns seven seniors to a girls’ swimming and diving team that showed flashes of success last season.

Chargers’ coach Erin Yeager expects those seniors — Kelsey Anderson, Sidney Campbell, Lacey Clore, Rachel Fedor, Kaylynn Hicks, Lydia LaChance, and Maddie Mershon — to lead the team this season.

“I have such a strong group of senior leaders,” Yeager said. “They have helped set the tone and positive focus this year and I think as they continue to communicate with me and with each other we can have a successful season.”

The Chargers also return junior Maggie Michael.

Yeager says the goal for her team is to finish toward the top of the Sagamore Conference and the sectional, and to see a return to the IHSAA State Finals. Campbell advanced in both the 50 and 100 freestyle as a sophomore in 2018-19.

North Montgomery also expects to see an impact from Annabel Anderson, Emily Schaub, and Melanie Quigg on the girls’ side, and Landon Birge on the boys’ side. On the boys’ team, the Chargers return Jameson Burget, Caleb Cochran, and Ben Eldridge.

Yeager says her team has tried to work through the new practice protocols that the COVID-19 pandemic has thrown their way and kept focused on improving each day.

“Adjusting to the pandemic has been interesting, we have set up practices differently to try and keep athletes in smaller groups,” she said. “But as with all things in coaching, you think about what your athletes need and work to give them the best possible chance of success. Yes it has been different, but my swimmers and I have come in with the mindset we will work through the challenges and changes and keep focused on our goals.”
