Southmont brings comedic musical to the stage

Cast to perform ‘The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee’ Friday and Sunday

NEW MARKET — Members of the Southmont High School Theater Department will bring the musical, “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” to the stage Friday and Sunday.

This fictional comedic musical follows delightfully quirky adolescent middle school students in a spelling bee.

Chip (Easton Hutson), Marcy (Abigail Sayler), Coneybear (Lillian Davis), Olive (Clair Simpson), Schwartzy (Jolie Hoenshell) and Barfee (Zoe Albertson) have made it to the Putnam County spelling bee finals which is hosted by Rona Lisa Paretti (Violet Shaw) and Vice Principal Douglas Panch (Jordan Endicott).

When students inevitably get an answer wrong, Michelle Mahoney (Avery Hannum) comes to the rescue with a juice box and a hug to escort each student off stage.

In the end, these wonderful characters learn the art of teamwork, the value of friendships and how to pronounce each other’s names correctly.

Performances times are 7 p.m. Friday and 2:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. Sunday in the Southmont High School auditorium, 6425 S. U.S. 231.
