Southmont edges out CHS, repeat as county gymnastics champions

NEW MARKET ­— It was the final county meet of the winter sports season on Monday as all three county gymnastics teams converged on to Southmont for not only their final meet of the regular season, but also to determine a county champion. Also part of the county meet between the Mounties, Athenians and Chargers was that all of the seniors on each team were recognized beforehand for a collective senior night celebration.

The meet scores throughout was about as narrow as it could get between the three county rivals. When all was tallied up it was the Mounties who repeated as county champions as they edged out Crawfordsville in the narrowest way possible, capturing the county title 88-87.975 over CHS. The Chargers weren’t far behind with 86 points in third place.

Crawfordsville senior Halle Elliot took first place all-around scoring 30.6 points for the Athenians. North Montgomery’s Dericka Jeffers placed second with 30.35 points while Southmont’s Ella Watson took third with 30.2.

On bars Crawfordsville’s Lillie Hummel took first with a score of 7.375, Elliot placed second with 7.225 points while North’s Maggie Yeager took third with a 6.8. Elliot and Watson also tied for first on vault both scoring an 8.4. Jadelyn Phillips of North Montgomery placed second with an 8.3 while South’s Jessie Bradley took third with an 8.225.

South’s Emma Bowers placed first on beam with a 7.8, while both Watson and Jeffers took second at 7.775. Christen Saunders of Cville placed third with a score of 7.35. Rounding out the events on floor Elliot’s 8.3 took home first while Watson placed second with a 8.175. Yeager placed third with a score of 7.8.

The seven seniors that were honored between the three county schools included Southmont’s Abigail Korhorn, Bowers, and Watson. Crawfordsville honored both Olivia Fichter and Elliot while the Chargers two seniors were both Phillips and Yeager.

All three county school will now prepare for the post-season as they’ll compete at the sectional at Lafayette Jeff on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. The top six placers in each event and top six all-around will qualify for next week’s Regional.
