PLAINFIELD — Southmont has a pair of strong showings from Trent Jones and Dillan Lauy at the IHSAA Sectional Track and Field meet at Plainfield. Jones placed second overall in both the 200 and 400 meter-dash, and placed fourth in the long jump with a distance of 20ft 8.5in. In the 200 Jones ended with a time of 22.97 which was just 34 one-hundredths of a second behind Avon’s Connor Maple who was placed first. In the 400 Jones ran a 49.69.
Lauy just missed qualifying for the Regional in the pole vault as he placed fourth with a height of 12 feet. He also placed sixth overall in the long jump with a distance of 20ft 2.5in.
Mountie coach Desson Hannum loved the way that both Lauy and Jones competed against the strongest competition they’ve seen all season.
“We have a very tough sectional and we were up against some big schools who we haven’t seen all year,” he said. “To do as well as he did tonight against that kind of competition was awesome to see. I’m sure he wanted to win both the 200 and 400 but he has nothing to be displeased about.”
“Dillan has been a competitor for us in all four years he’s been here. He’s been one of the guys that we’ve depended on since he was a freshman. To have the season that he did after not having a season last year I’m really proud of his performance not just tonight but all season.”
Jones will now get ready to compete at the Lafayette Jeff Regional next Thursday as he looks to join some of the former Mounties who came before him at competing at a state championship meet. The last Mountie to go to the state meet was Brooks Long in 2017.
“He just has to do what he has all season, maybe with just fine tuning some things,” Hannum said of Jones’ preparation. “We’ve been lucky to have a few kids go and compete at the state meet in the past and to have Trent in line to be the next person to do that it would be amazing. He’s put in all of the work that he needs, its just a matter of going out there and performing like we and he knows he can.”
Lynas, McClerkin advance from West Lafayette
Crawfordsville’s Ty Lynas and James McClerkin both advanced from the West Lafayette boys track and field sectional on Thursday.
Lynas placed second in the 110 hurdles with a time of 15.64 seconds, and second in the high jump with a height of 6-feet.
North Montgomery’s James McClerkin also advanced in the pole vault, placing third with a mark of 12-feet.
Both the Athenians and Chargers had several more place in the top-8 as Crawfordsville placed fifth as a team and North Montgomery seventh.
North Montgomery’s 4X800 meter relay team of Wil Campbell, Jayden Rausch, Henry Garver, and Kylin White placed eighth with a time of 9:57.92. Ben Cody placed sixth in the 110 hurdles in 17.95 seconds, while the 4X100 meter relay team of Cody, Joel Clouser, McClerkin, and Owen Utterback placed eighth with a time of 47.72 seconds. Gabe Laws placed fourth in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 44.72 seconds, while Elijah McCartney placed seventh in the 3200 meter run in 10:43.93. The foursome of Cody, Utterback, Rausch, and Laws placed seventh in the 4X400 meter relay with a time of 3:51.98. Porter Bennett also placed eighth in the high jump with a leap of 5-feet-6-inches and Laws was eighth in the long jump with a mark of 19-feet-8.5-inches.
For Crawfordsville, the foursome of Arthur Ruano, Drake Burris, Roman Contreras, and Tyeson Fuller placed seventh in the 4X800 meter relay with a time of 9:23.92, while Ziair Morgan, Alex Kellerman, Fuller, and Mikale Willis teamed up to place sixth in the 4X100 meter relay with a time of 45.88 seconds. Lynas, Kellerman, Fuller, and Willis placed sixth in the 4X400 meter relay with a time of 3:44.15.
Jordan Shrout placed seventh in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 46.1 seconds, while Ryan Miller placed eighth in the 3200 meter run in 10:47.55. Hunter Hutchison was eighth in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:09.23.
In the field Kellerman was sixth in the high jump with a mark of 5-feet-10-inches, while Nate Schroeter threw 128-feet-10-inches to place fifth in the discus throw and Nathaniel Million was eighth in the pole vault with a mark of 10-feet.
