Strong summer helps Meadows prep for state finals run

What Southmont’s Addison Meadows has accomplished in her first two years with the Mountie girls golf team is already remarkable.

Back-to-back state finals appearances in her freshman and sophomore seasons and she’s climbed the leaderboards in each of those two years. Last fall, Meadows tied for 28th overall and was named to the Indiana High School Golf’s Coaches Association’s First-Team All-State.

With all that success, there’s more out there for Meadows to achieve. In preparation for her junior season, which will begin July 31 when the Mounties open the year at Harrison Hills, Meadows has spent most of the summer on the golf course playing in several tournaments.

Meadows has not only faced tough competition but has also brought home some hardware for her efforts. At the Indiana Junior Golf Age Group Championship on June 21-22, Meadows took home first place and shot a two-day score of 146. After firing a 77 on day one, Meadows came back to fire her 18-hole personal best of a 69 to cruise to the title. On June 16, Meadows was the runner-up in the Indiana Women’s Golf Association’s Championship with an even par 72.

“I’ve worked really hard on my game this summer,” Meadows said. “Every tournament that I go to I’m trying to get better in all facets of my game and that means chipping, putting, and on the driving range. I’ve played in a lot of bigger and more competitive tournaments that college coaches keep their eyes on. I’m proud of the hardware that I’ve been able to bring home.

“In that IWGA event in Muncie I was -3 through 13 but just had a couple of bogeys but still played well overall. The following week in Peru I shot my personal best and I knew that my last put was for that 69 so I was really determined to make that put. Shooting that and winning the tournament made me proud of my capabilities and showed how good of a player I am.”

Those two tournaments aren’t the only ones Meadows has played well in. In a tournament in late April, Meadows tied for second with a two-day score of 150 (77-73). On June 7-8 at Ackerman-Allen Course in West Lafayette at the Indiana PGA Championship Meadows tied for 11th, then in her next tournament tied for seventh at the Northern Junior Masters on June 18-19. At the Central Junior Masters on July 9-10 Meadows placed 13th. At her most recent tournament July 16-17 she tied for fourth and the Southern Junior Masters.

Meadows will be relied upon to be a leader for the Mounties on and off the course this fall. With golf being such a mental game, there was a point this summer where Meadows wasn’t playing her best and she notes how while it’s something that a lot of golfers go through, it’s been a tough thing to overcome.

“These last two weeks or so I’ve been in a little bit of a slump,” she said. “I was trying to go out on the course every day and just have fun and not think about it, but it still wasn’t showing up on the scorecard which was frustrating. It made me doubt myself a little bit but overall, this summer my mental game has been in a good spot. I’ve really tried to ramp up my game with the high school season being literally right around the corner.”

As far as goals and expectations for the standout junior, well let’s just say they’re high as always. After climbing the leaderboards in her first two seasons at the state finals, Meadows is laser-focused on proving why she’s one of the top golfers in the state

“My personal goals are to go out and win the regional and place in the top 5-10 at state,” she said. “I want to be in that top 10 at the very least. I know that it’s going to take a ton of hard work to get there, but I know that I’m talented enough to do it.”
