The adult and the children’s summer reading programs were a big success this year. Library staff have been enjoying the busyness and activities that come with increased patron activity during summer reading time. It is great to see everyone’s smiling faces in the library again. We would also like to thank local businesses that donated adult summer reading prizes. We appreciate Crawfordsville Paper Products, Fresh Cut by Shannon Family Farms, Hoosier Heartland State Bank, Arni’s, Little Mexico, Turkey Run Inn, Milligan’s Flowers, Brothers Pizza, Plaza Lanes and the American Sewing Guild for their kind donations to help support CDPL adult reading programs.
Anyone can help support library programs with their donations at the Friends of the Library Book Sale on the second Saturday of each month in the basement of the library. The next book sale is Aug. 14. All proceeds go to youth programs. Thanks to all of you for your support.

If you follow CDPL on social media, you may have already seen some of these book recommendation posts.
Another place to find good reads is from the seven or so monthly book displays located on the first and second floors. Currently, the Christmas in July display and the Local Author display are found right inside the public entrance. The Staff Picks display for the month of July is located at the Circulation desk, which offers a wide variety of fiction and non-fiction books and movies, as well as a few CD books and titles in large print.
Here are highlights from some of the staff recommendations for July:
• “This Is How You Lose the Time War” by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone (FIC El-Moh) is an almost poetic time-travel collaboration that spans the whole of time and space.
• “Broken (In The Best Possible Way)” by Jenny Lawson (070.92 Law) brings readers along on the author’s mental and physical health journey, in heartbreaking and hilarious fashion.
• “The Anthropocene Reviewed” by John Green (814.6 Gre) is a thoughtful collection of essays by a local Indianapolis author.
• “Drives of a Lifetime,” published by National Geographic (910.202 Dri), offers 500 of the world’s greatest road trips.
• The new PBS version of All Creatures Great and Small (DVD FIC All) is based on the book by veterinarian James Herriot (636.089 Her). We also have the first season of the older BBC series (also DVD FIC All), so you can compare and contrast both versions to the original book.
