Turnovers doom Mustangs in tourney opener

Posted

WILLIAMSPORT — Fountain Central had no answers for Seeger’s defensive pressure in a 65-18 setback in the Bi-County Holiday Tournament opener on Friday night.

The Patriots, who improved to 12-1 on the season, entered the game allowing just 26.9 points per game, and stayed true to their defensive average from the opening tip. Seeger scored the first 11 points of the game, forced 23 first half Mustang turnovers, and led 36-5 at the half.

“The game-plan was we wanted to push the ball, and everything we’ve worked on the past two days,” Fountain Central coach Tom Anderson said. “I wanted to push it, and I didn’t want to play slow tempo, but we did everything totally opposite to what we worked on.”

Not only did Fountain Central (3-9) struggle offensively, just 7-of-22 from the field for the game, but Seeger connected on more than 50 percent of their shots (23-of-44).

“The first half defensively we did pretty well,” Anderson added. “They’re a good shooting team. Offensively we couldn’t get anything going. Every offensive play I called, nothing was there and they weren’t getting into it.”

Kiley White led the Patriots with 19 points, all in the first three quarters.

The Mustangs tightened things up defensively in the second half, but still had no solution to the Patriot’s defensive pressure. Dakota Borman led Fountain Central with nine points, including seven in the second half.

Emily Shrader also reached double-figures for the Patriots with 11 — connecting on 3-of-4 shots from behind the arc. Seeger shot 8-of-13 as a team from 3-point range.

Fountain Central entered Friday night on a two-game winning streak, but Anderson felt like the Mustangs were timid because of the opponent.

“The last few games we’ve played pretty well, and then we came in tonight just intimidated by the name Seeger,” he said.

Fountain Central plays Covington today at 2:30 p.m. at Williamsport in the consolation game. The Trojans fell to Attica 41-39 on Friday night in the other semi-final. Seeger and the Red Ramblers will face off at 5:30 p.m. in the championship.
