DARLINGTON — A small plane that took off Sunday from an Indianapolis flight school crashed into a field near Darlington, killing the two people aboard, authorities said.

Yellow crime scene tape surrounded the wreckage near the intersection of State Road 47 and C.R. 800E hours after the late-morning crash.

The single-engine aircraft left the Lift Academy in Indianapolis at 9:53 a.m., according to data from FlightAware.com. The plane crashed about 25 minutes after takeoff.

Both passengers were pronounced dead at the scene, Indiana State Police Sgt. Jeremy Piers said in a news release.

The victims names were not immediately being released pending proper identification and notification of next of kin, Piers said.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash.

A Lift Academy spokesperson told The Associated Press the company was “heartbroken by this tragic accident and the loss of our team members.”

The spokesperson did not have further details about who was aboard the plane.

Lift Academy did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the Journal Review.

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department, Darlington Fire Department, Montgomery County Emergency Management Agency and Montgomery County Coroner Darren Forman assisted at the scene.
