WAYNETOWN — A head-on collision Saturday involving two passenger vehicles on U.S. 136 near C.R. 650W claimed the lives of two people, one of whom was a young child.

Emergency personnel were dispatched at 5:10 p.m. Saturday to the area of U.S. 136 and C.R. 650W regarding a personal injury crash involving two vehicles.

Upon arrival, deputies located a 2007 Jeep Liberty overturned in the ditch and on fire. The second vehicle, a 2000 Ford Taurus, was partially off the roadway.

Deputies learned the Jeep, driven by Michelle Caldwell-Davis, 43, of Waynetown, was eastbound on U.S. 136. The 2000 Ford was traveling westbound on U.S. 136 and was being driven by Courtney Tolbert, 45, of Alamo. For an unknown reason, the Ford crossed the center line of travel and into the eastbound lane and a head-on crash occurred. Tolbert was pronounced deceased at the scene. A one-year-old child who was a passenger in the Jeep was later pronounced deceased at the hospital.

Caldwell-Davis and another juvenile passenger were transported by Crawfordsville Fire Department initially to Franciscan Health Crawfordsville and later to Indianapolis-area hospitals due to their injuries.

Police say seat belts and child seats were in use.

Crash reconstructionists from the sheriff’s office responded to the scene and are still investigating the crash. If you have any information regarding this crash, contact Captain Jake Watson at 765-362-3740.

The sheriff’s office was assisted at the scene by Crawfordsville Fire Department, Waynetown Fire Department, Montgomery County Coroner’s Office and Froedge’s Towing.
