Unattended candles cause house fire

Posted

At 8:17 p.m. Friday, the Crawfordsville Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire in the 1300 block of South Nucor Road.

On arrival, fire crews encountered smoke coming from the basement access inside the garage. Firefighters made an interior attack and rapidly brought the fire under control. A search of the residence confirmed all occupants had safely evacuated and were unharmed.

Investigators determined that the fire originated in the basement and was caused by unattended candles. The fire is not believed to be intentional.

Crews remained on the scene until 9:30 p.m. performing ventilation operations and investigating.

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, Montgomery County Central Communications Center and Duke Energy assisted.

The Crawfordsville Fire Department reminds residents never to leave candles or other open flames unattended. Always extinguish candles before leaving a room or going to bed and keep them away from combustible materials and out of reach of children and pets.
