Under The Sea

CMS taking stage with Disney’s ‘The Little Mermaid Jr.’

Mermaid Ariel dreams of life outside of the ocean in Crawfordsville Middle School’s production of Disney’s “The Little Mermaid Jr.” this weekend at the Connie L. Meek Auditorium.

Showtimes are 7 p.m. today and Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $8 for adults and $6 for students. Tickets must be purchased in advance by going to showtix4u.com and searching Crawfordsville Middle School.

On her quest to escape the sea, Ariel (Gianna Kochert Cosby) defies her father King Triton (Jack Sweet) and strikes a bargain with evil sea witch Ursula (Shylah Hall) to live as human.

“I really like being on stage, and singing and dancing are my two favorite hobbies,” said Hall, a seventh grader, “so being able to do that all day makes me happy.”

Being under the lights is also Kochert Cosby’s favorite part of acting. Ariel falls in love with Prince Eric (Isaac Zuniga), who is making his debut performance. For some of the cast members, the show is an introduction to theater.

Watching “Hamilton” on Disney Plus inspired Zuniga to take the stage.

“It makes me, like, express myself, honestly,” Zuniga said.

The cast assembled on the stage at Crawfordsville High School one afternoon this week to rehearse an upbeat remix of the musical’s classic tune “Under the Sea.”

“We try to bring a little bit of Disney World into Crawfordsville,” said director Jennie Swick.

The show is the first of three back-to-back performances in the Meek auditorium in the coming weeks. Next up is the high school’s fall play followed by the Sugar Creek Players’ production of “Elf.”
