United Way in Montgomery County kicked off its annual campaign Tuesday at IRA Whiskey, announcing this year’s campaign theme, chair and fundraising goal.

This year’s campaign chair is Kurtis Broadstreet, who has a long history in the community and involvement with local nonprofit organizations. Broadstreet grew up at the Boys & Girls Club of Montgomery County, worked there as a teenager and has continued to support the organization into adulthood.

Broadstreet also serves as operations manager for local radio stations WCDQ, WIMC and WCVL, where he is often out in the community covering local events and stories.

United Way Director Kayla Miles said Broadstreet’s passion for the community made him a natural choice for campaign chair.

“I see his love and his passion,” Miles said when asked how she chose Broadstreet.

Miles said she realized Broadstreet would be a good fit after he interviewed her during a golf scramble.

“I think it was when he interviewed me at the golf scramble that I knew he would be great for it, just because he came out there and he was excited and just the questions that he asked,” Miles said. “And then I listened to the 5 o’clock report, and I just know, it sends it home that he loves this community and that it’s home.”

The theme for this year’s campaign is “United Together.” Miles said the message behind the theme is that United Way helps many different people facing different types of needs, including single mothers, people who are unhoused, victims of domestic violence and those who simply need help making rent.

“How can we work together to help everyone?” Miles asked.

“So united together means working together to address the issues that our community are facing, but not just financially,” she said. “We all hold a piece to the same puzzle, but together we can build the puzzle. We need to have those hard conversations. We need to bring all of the pieces. United Together is so much more than just the dollars.

“It’s literally about bringing our community together and having the conversations that need to be had.”

The Montgomery County office fundraises for 18 partner agencies and four programs through grants. Partner agencies include the Boys & Girls Club of Montgomery County, Trinity Mission, CARA and the Family Crisis Shelter.

In addition to supporting its partner agencies, United Way hosts First Door, an initiative that provides resources and assistance to people currently experiencing or about to enter a financial crisis.

The organization also participates in the nationwide Dolly Parton Imagination Library program, which currently provides free books to about 1,100 children countywide.

United Way’s Volunteers Income Tax Assistance program provides free tax filing assistance through certified experts. The organization also hosts a free Kindergarten Countdown Camp, which prepares children with little to no preschool experience for the traditional classroom structure and curriculum.

The goal for the 2026 campaign is $320,000.
