The public is invited to attend the dedication of a new commemorative sign at Marie Canine Plaza at 11 a.m. Tuesday at 200 E. Main St., downtown Crawfordsville.
Since its installation in 2003, the Canine Plaza has been an attractive greenspace in the heart of the city. Having been made possible through the strength of local public and private collaboration, the plaza has continually served as an example of the economic benefits of quality downtown investment.
With a respect for the original vision for this distinguished space, Crawfordsville Main Street and the City of Crawfordsville worked together to see the plaza’s failing fountain replaced with a more durable and attractive centerpiece, one that paid homage to a former occupant of the block, the stately Crawford Hotel (1900-1973).
The 2024 Crawford Fountain incorporates architectural elements from that historic structure, including the “C.H.” emblems on the lower basin. These were cast from a single Crawford Hotel entrance crest that was salvaged when the structure was razed in 1973.
Join organizers Tuesday to celebrate the new marker, one that honors local partnership and an enduring vision; to preserve and showcase the special history, beauty and character of the Crawfordsville Commercial Historic District.
