Woodblock printmaker featured at Bishop gallery

Posted

A Putnam County-based woodblock printmaker will present his work at Crawfordsville District Public Library’s Mary Bishop Memorial Gallery in an exhibit opening this week.

M. Rees is a nationally recognized artist whose projects are part of the permanent collection of the Indiana Bar Association, the Putnam County Historical Society and the Putnam County Museum. His work is also featured at Athens Arts and other galleries across the eastern United States. He owns the independent print shop Wildwood Press.

The show opens Aug. 19 and runs through September during the library’s regular hours.

Rees studied his craft under St. Louis master printer Tom Huck, who has built a following with his large-scale satirical woodcuts. The technique involves carving an image into a block of wood, inking the wood and then transferring the image onto paper.

“For much of my adulthood I’ve been trying to relearn what every five-year-old understands about color and composition,” Rees said.

A limited amount of Rees’ work will be for sale through the circulation desk during the exhibition.

Artists or artists groups’ interested in displaying their work at the gallery in 2022 should contact the gallery coordinator at 765-362-4618.
