Baseball Season Preview

Young Mounties work toward steady improvement

Posted

NEW MARKET — It was a learning season for Southmont baseball last season. Due to COVID-19 canceling the 2020 season, the Mounties didn’t have a single player with varsity experience on their roster as all were just freshman and sophomores.

That inexperience led to just a 3-20 season, but with a full year of experience now under their belt, Southmont hopes to improve under the guidance of skipper Brad Wininger.

Juniors Nick Scott, Adam Cox, Mason Hall and Chayce Howell will be some of the juniors expected to lead the way for the Mounties. Last season Howell led the Mounties with a .324 average. Cox batted .284 and Hall .262.

Scott was the lead man on the mound as he compiled a 3.46 ERA with 65 strikeouts in 46.1 innings pitches.

What plagued the Mounties for most of last season was their inability to score runs as they averaged just a little over four runs a game. In order to have some more success this season the Mounties will also need to cut down on their errors in the field as they totaled 86 last year. The pitching staff should be improved with a year of experience as should the Mounties as a whole.

There is certainly room for optimism with Southmont this season as they look to have an improved 2022.
