A total of 251,373 pages were read by Parke Heritage Middle School students over the past few weeks. The Parke County Public Library sponsored Read Across Parke County, which encouraged students to read and record the pages they read. Eighth grader Libby Johnson was the top reader. Other top readers were Mercedes Thompson, Lorelei Long, Lexi Mundell, Sam O'Brien and Miranda Oldham. These readers will be going out to lunch and will receive a gift card to a bookstore. As a part of their Leader in Me program, Turkey Run Elementary students received Habit Hero Awards. Habit Hero awards are given to students who set an example by being a good leader and demonstrate one of the seven habits. Awards are presented by staff members to students who they believe have excelled in one of the habits. Each year, FFA chapters around the country celebrate National FFA Week. It’s a time to share what FFA is and the impact it has on members every day. Parke Heritage High School and Parke Heritage Middle School FFA members participated in several activities during the week to promote their chapters and agriculture. District VII officers Cale Williams, Audrey Richardson, Calvin Myers and Logan Strauser were guest speakers in Miss Hallie Jones’ and Mr. Colton McMullen’s agriculture classes. They spoke about the opportunities in FFA and the skills they have learned in career and leadership development events. The group made personal brands based on their talents and personal qualities, and played trivia games about agriculture and FFA..“Hats for Howie” was organized by both chapters. Students could pay $1 or more to wear a hat during the school day. The money raised will be donated to the Colten Howard Memorial Fund. Dress-up days were also held at each school. On Wednesday, the high school members read to elementary students and served lunch to the high school staff. Parke Heritage High School Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) members competed in their state competition held in Muncie from Feb. 29-March 2. Three groups received the highest score in their competition and received a National Qualifying bid. Earning gold medals were Savannah Cotten and Maddy Fisher in the Interior Design category and Mackenzie Reath and Justice Stark in the Public Policy Advocate category. Emma Patton received a silver medal and a national qualifying bid in the Hospitality, Tourism and Recreation category. Earning silver medals were Haley Holtsclaw - Fashion Construction; Treyton Burgess - Food Innovation; Quinten Smith - Professional Presentation; and Will Patton - Repurpose and Redesign.
FCCLA Competes at State
It was a gold medal day for Parke Heritage High School choir students who participated in the Indiana State School Music Association State Solo and Ensemble Contest held Feb. 17 at Perry Meridian High School. Jenna McVay, Kim Koren and Ella Lacy all earned gold ratings for their solo performances. Lacy performed “Homeward Bound” arranged by Jay Althouse. Koren’s song was “The Vagabond” by Ralph Vaughn Williams. McVay sang “Amarilli, Mia Bella” by Giulio Caccini, which was all in Italian. The choir director is Alec Moeller. Gold Medal Day
Julia Nichols, 5, has completed the Crawfordsville District Public Library program 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten, for the fifth time. Julia, along with her parents Tyler and Mindy Nichols has read 5,000 books. Julia's favorite book is "Pete the Cat and the Bedtime Blues" by Kimberly and James Dean. Mom said, "The library has been a wonderful place to meet and play with friends over the years. We appreciate the support from the reading program to encourage a love for reading."
Nichols a Reading Champ
Nolan Benecke, 3, has completed the Crawfordsville District Public Library program 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten for the third time. He is the son of Matthew and Jillian Benecke. Together they have read 3,000 books. Mom said, "Nolan loves going to the library for all the fun activities and programs they do! "
