4-12 Roundup: Big night of action for many area teams lead to plenty of victories

Kirsch and Martin lead the way for Chargers in SAC opening win over Stars

Jarrod Kirsch and Brayden Martin combined to throw a three-hit shutout for North Montgomery baseball as the Chargers opened up Sagamore Conference play with a 3-0 win over Western Boone. The Chargers haven’t been as clean in the field as they would have liked in their previous three games, but the defense was sure-handed against the Stars and Kirsch and Martin did the rest.

Kirsch pitched five innings allowing just two hits while striking out nine Stars while Martin in two innings of relief struck out three more and gave up just one hit.

“They both did a great job of working ahead in the count and commanding the strike zone all night,” Charger coach Matt Voorhees said. “We pride ourselves on the defensive end and the last two games we haven’t committed an error so you can tell we’re improving on that end.”

Offensively the Chargers tallies seven hits all by seven different hitters. The highlight of the night came when Dylan Braun picked up his first home run of the season in the top of the third inning for the Chargers.

North Montgomery with the victory is 3-1 (1-0 SAC) on the season and will host the Stars tomorrow night with weather permitting.

Mounties fall to Bruins in SAC opener

Southmont opened up Sagamore Conference play on Tuesday with a trip to Lizton to square off against the Bruins. It was another close game for the Mounties until the Bruins were able to pull away late for an 8-4 win. The Mounties held a 4-3 lead in the fifth but saw that slip away as the Bruins would score five run the next three innings.

The fourth time through the lineup proved to be costly for Adam Cox who took the loss on the mound . 

Southmont falls to 0-4 (0-1 SAC) on the season and will host the Bruins tomorrow night.

Miller sharp on the hill, leads Mustangs to first win

Lukas Miller delivered on the mound in a big way for Fountain Central on Tuesday as the Mustangs picked up their first victory of the season with a 3-2 win over South Vermilion. Miller threw a complete game allowing just a single earned run while striking out 11 and giving up just five hits.

The offense was few and far between for both teams but the Mustangs scored single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to take a 3-0 lead. South Vermilion made things interesting late scoring two in the seventh, but Miller shut the door for FC who improves to 1-4 (1-3 WRC) on the season.

The Mustangs will host Frontier tomorrow night before hosting Southmont on Friday.

Softball

Warriors sweep Athenians in DH

It was a rough two games for Crawfordsville against Danville as the Athenians and Warriors opened up Sagamore Conference play on Tuesday with double-header at CHS. The Warriors outscored the Athenians 28-6 in the two games.

The first was an 11-0 shutout in game one followed by a 17-6 loss in game two.

Brooklyn Mills continued to swing a hot bat for th Athenians and tallied her third home run of the season in game two.

CHS falls to 0-7 (0-2 SAC) on the season and will travel to compete in the Hornet Invite in Rossville on Saturday.

Chargers open up SAC play with loss to Stars

Western Boone scored early and often as they defeated North Montgomery 14-0 in five innings as both teams opened up Sagamore Conference play. The Chargers offense was held to just three hits while the Stars tallied 11 and capitalized off four Charger errors.

Piper Ramey in four innings of work allowed nine earned runs while walking three and striking out seven and picking up one of the three Charger hits.

North Montgomery falls to 0-3 (0-1 SAC) on the season and will host the Stars tomorrow night.

Mustangs fall to South Newton 

Fountain Central was back in action for their second game against WRC foe South Vermilion on Tuesday and fell 13-1 in six innings. South Vermilion scored three runs in both the first and second innings before adding three more in the fifth and closing the game with four in the sixth.

Kacey Kirkpatrick was a bright spot for the Mustangs at the plate going 3-3 with the lone Mustang RBI.

FC falls to 1-4 (0-4 WRC) on the season and will host Southmont on Thursday.

Tennis

Chargers swept by Red Devils

North Montgomery finally was able to open up their season as they traveled to West Lafayette for a match with the Red Devils. North Montgomery would fall to the tough West Lafayette squad 5-0.

Carli DeSmet fell 0-6, 0-6 at one singles to Amy Wang. Sydney Nideffer was defeated by Lore Sebatta at No. 2 single 0-6, 0-6. At three singles Paige Hudson lost to Kayla Xu 0-6, 0-6. The one doubles tandem of Allison Guard and Sydnee Turner was defeated by Leandra Sutter and Margaret Pokopy 1-6, 0-6 and Courtney Engels and Sayna Ratcliff fell 1-6, 0-6 to Lauran Kish and Hannah Parke at two singles.

“We’re glad to have the first full match experience under our belts,” first-year Charger coach Lori Guard said. “We may make some adjustments to our line up working in some of the underclass players. This first match let us see some of our weaknesses and what we need to focus on going forward.” 

The Chargers are scheduled to host Mooresville tomorrow night (weather pending) before hosting county rival Crawfordsville on Thursday.

Mustangs continue strong start to season

Fountain Central is clicking early in the season as the Mustangs traveled to Parke Heritage for another WRC contest on Tuesday. The host Wolves were no match for FC as the Mustangs picked up a 5-0 win to improve to 2-0 on the season and 2-0 in the WRC.

Lillie Fishero defeated Hannah O’Brien 6-2, 6-0 at one singles while Haley Webb was victorious 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2 singles over Rebekah Ayers. Angela Gonzalez at three singles won over Jenna Brown 6-2, 6-0. At one doubles Emily Jimenez and Alydia Mellady defeated Grace Ramsay and Kristen Wood in three sets 7-5, 2-6, 6-3. The No. 2 doubles team of Marylee Muniz and Hannah Prickett brought home a 6-3, 6-2 win over Kateylyn Williams and Hannah Thurman.

The Mustangs will host South Newton tomorrow night.

Boys Golf

Mounties kick off season with win

Southmont hosted Clinton Central at the Crawfordsville Country Club to kick off their season on Tuesday. The Mounties would be victorious over the Bulldogs 168-221.

Harrison Haddock and Nolan Allen were co-medalists by carding 39’s for the Mounties. Luke Tesmer shot a 44 while Ty Elles recorded a 46. Carson McKinney’s 48 and Tanner Walls’ 49 rounded out the scoring for Southmont will travel to Seeger on Friday for a three-team meet with Seeger and Covington.

Mustangs begin year with victory in three-team meet

Fountain Central got their season off on the winning track Tuesday as they took on Covington and South Newton and came home with a victory. FC shot a 193 as they just edged out the Trojans who shot a 194. South Newton placed third with a 204.

Wes Jackson led FC with a 45 in the win. Jaylin Payne carded a 47, Kam Krug a 50, Koby Wolf 51, Carter Merryman 56, and Dylan song rounded out the scoring for the Mustangs with 62.

The Mustangs will be back on the links tomorrow as they will host North Montgomery.
