Bruins come away with sweep of Mounties
Southmont couldn’t keep up with the high-powered Tri-West offense on Thursday and fell to the Bruins 16-1 in five innings. The Bruins scored early and often plating five runs in the opening frame off starting pitcher Hanna Nichols. Five more in the third and four in the fourth along with single runs in the second and fifth and the Bruins were able to walk away with a season sweep of Southmont.
The Mountie offense could only muster three hits. Macie Shirk scored Taylor Grino for the only Mountie run of the game in the first inning. Grino had two of the three Mountie hits while Chelsea Veatch had the other.
Nichols took the loss as in 3 1/3 innings she surrendured 13 earned runs, 10 hits and walked eight Bruins while striking out just two.
Southmont falls to 1-2 (0-2 SAC) on the season and will be in action this evening as they make a trip to Eminence for a makeup game that was re-scheduled from last Saturday.
Chargers swept by Stars
North Montgomery fell to Sagamore Conference foe Western Boone 21-1 on Thursday as the Stars would sweep the Chargers in the two-game series. Eight Charger errrors proved fatal as the Stars pounded out 14 hits against North Montgomery.
Megan Raff took the loss on the hill giving up 12 earned runs on 10 hits while walking five.
Piper Ramey, Cascie Keller, Jaymie Freeman, Rachel Smith, and Sienna Coleman each collected an individual hit for the Chargers who fall to 0-4 (0-2 SAC) on the season.
They’ll host Indiana School for the Deaf back at North Montgomery this evening.
Tennis
Mustangs remain perfect, sweep S. Vermillion
Fountain Central continued their strong start to the season and remained unbeaten with a 5-0 road win on Thursday over South Vermmillion.
Lillie Fishero was victorious 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles over Jessica Servis. Haley Webb defeated Amelia Craig at No. 2 singles 6-0, 6-0 and Angela Gonzalez brought home a 6-0 6-0 win at three singles.
At one doubles Emily Jimenez and Alydia Mellady defeated Cora Cottrell and Leah Sampson 6-0, 6-0 while the tandem of Marylee Muniz and Hannah Prickett at No. 2 doubles brought home a 6-3, 6-0 win over Emily Vaughn and Taylor Inman.
Fountain Central is 3-0 (3-0 WRC) on the season and will look to remain unbeaten when they return to action on Monday at home vs Attica.
Golf
Athenians compete in gusty conditions on links
Crawfordsville golf traveled to Danville Thursday and came away wiht a 179-226 win over the Warriors. Landon Timmons was the medalist for CHS by firing a 42. Tanner Gilland carded a 43 with Luke Ranard ending with a 45. Hayden Jeffries shot a 49 and Landon Hurt rounded out the scoring for CHS with a 54.
“I’m pleased with our performance on a very windy day at a challenging course,” Crawfordsville coach Tom Perkins said. “Landon Timmons kept the ball in play and avoided big numbers-a really good round. We’re playing in their Invite Saturday, so it’s good to get familiar again with the course.”
CHS moves to 2-0 on the season and as Perkins noted will be back at Danville on Saturday for the Danville Invite.
Mounties win three-team meet with Trojans and Patriots
Southmont traveled to Harrison Hills Thursday for a three-team meet agasint Covington and Seeger and the Mounties came out on top with the win over the Trojans and Patriots with a 188. Covington placed second with a 195 with Seeger carding a 232.
Nolan Allen led Southmont with a 44 while Luke Tesmer and Ty Elles both ended with 47’s. Harrison Haddock carded a 50, Carson McKinney 52, and Tanner Walls rounded out the scoring for the Mounties with a 53.
The Mounties will travel to Danville on Saturday to compete in the Danville Invite.
