Athenians pick up season opening win vs Eagles on links
Crawfordsville boys golf got its 2023 started on Tuesday with a 195-259 win over South Putnam at the Cville Muni.
Sophomore Tanner Gilland took home medalist honors with a 43 with Thomas Bowling shooting a 46. Braxton Smith and Hayden Jeffries both carded 53’s while Chet Kincaid scored a 56. Andrew Jones rounded out the scoring for CHS with a 59.
“It’s good to open the season with a win, but we still have plenty of work to do,” Cville coach Tom Perkins said. “A lot of first time varsity players tonight and I think the nerves showed a little bit. We’ll be spending a lot of practice time on the green before Saturday.”
Cville will compete in the Greenwood Invitational on Saturday for their first 18-hole match of the year.
Softball
Mounties struggle in season opener vs Red Ramblers
Having to replace three star-studded seniors from last season’s team, Southmont softball struggled in its season opener falling to Attica 14-2 in five innings. The Red Ramblers pounded out 16 hits in the win and put up a seven spot in the fifth to seal the game.
Southmont tallied seven hits of their own. One each coming from Jenna Grino, Chelsea Veatch, Brady Spencer, Mallory Mason, Kyndale Rice, Kamden Dinius, and Kali Todd. Dara Watson and Spencer drove in the two Mountie runs.
On the mound Rice lasted 3.1 innings giving up 11 hits and six earned runs. Veatch was unable to fare any better in relief as in two-thirds of an inning she gave five hits, eight earned runs and walked three.
The Mounties begin the season 0-1 and will be off until Friday when they travel to Greencastle.
Mustangs fall to Panthers in second straight game
Fountain Central softball was swept in by WRC foe Riverton Parke on Tuesday by a final score of 14-2. Zoey Foxworthy DeJournett picked up both RBI’s for the Mustangs while Jackie Weber also notched a hit for FC.
Kacey Kirkpatrick took the loss in the circle allowing five hits and 10 runs (five earned) over four innings. She struck out six and walked five.
FC falls to 0-2 (0-2 WRC) on the season and will return to action on Thursday when they travel to Crawfordsville (0-0)

Athenians get swept by Red Devils in season opener
Crawfordsville girls tennis was swept 5-0 in its season opener against West Lafayette. The Athenians will be back in action on Thursday when they travel to Northview.
