Mounties begin season with win over Knights
Southmont boys tennis has high expectations for the 2022 season. The Mounties got their season underway on Wednesday as they traveled to take on Lafayette Central Catholic. In their first match of the season South was able to handle the Knight and come home with a 4-1 victory.
The Mounteis took home wins at all three singles spots as senior Adam Cox defeated Nathan Bapst 6-2, 6-3 at one singles. Luke Tesmer at two singles took care of Gavin Boutelle 6-4, 6-2 while Harrison Haddock defeated Craig Cahoon 6-3, 6-0 at three singles.
The duo of Chayce Howell and Mason Hall made quick work of Lucan Gerkey and Max Siemers at one doubles 6-0, 6-1. The lone loss on the night for the Southmont came at two double as Riley Danohave and Trevor Powers defeated Caden Jones and Gavin Downey in three sets 7-6, 2-6, 6-2.
The Mounties will return to the courts on Thursday when they host Terre Haute South for their home opener.
Mustangs make quick work of Hot dogs
After a thrilling 3-2 win in their season opener on Tuesday, Fountain Central hosted Frankfort for their home opener and were able to make quick work of the Hot Dogs as they came away with a 5-0 sweep.
Skyler Hoagland at one singles came away with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Edwin Wainscott. At two singles Gabe McCollum defeated Elijah West 6-0, 6-0. Noah Armstrong picked up a 6-3, 6-0 win over Jackson Ray at three singles.
At one doubles Brayden Prickett and Koby Wolf were winners over Carson Hale and Kelby Santos 6-2, 6-2. Rounding out the wins for FC was the duo of Wes Jackson and Lukas Miller at two doubles as they earned a 6-0, 6-3 win over Alex Farley and Isai Jimenez.
FC improves to 2-0 on the season and will welcome Southmont to Veedersburg on Monday.
Chargers fall in another close match to Warriors
North Montgomery boys tennis continued to show fight and grit on Wednesday as they traveled to Warren Central. However the win would evade the Chargers as they would fall to the Warriors 3-2 as the match came down to a three set decision at two singles.
The two wins for the Chargers came at both doubles spots as Brookes Walters and Nate McCoy defeated Issac Wilson and Trenton Pendleton at one doubles 6-0, 6-3. The duo of Haze Kashon and Owen Utterback brought home a win at two doubles over Jonathan Guacla and Braylen Horne 6-0, 6-0.
Evan Wilson defeated North Montgomery’s Beckett Martin at one singles 6-1, 6-0 and Alex Chapman was defeated by Jack Basham at three singles 6-4, 6-1.
Gilbert Earnst and Hayden Turner decided the match at two singles with Earnst earning the three set win 3-6, 7-5, 6-2.
North Montgomery falls to 0-2 on the season and returns to action on Monday when they host Central Catholic.

Chargers fall in season opener to Tiger Cubs
Featuring eight new starters, North Montgomgery girls soccer opened up their season agaisnt Greencastle on Wednesday and would fall 5-1. The lone Charger goal was scored by Teegan Bacon who moved into sole possession of first place with her 69th career goal right before halftime.
“We knew there going to be some growing pains with having so many new girls in new spots,” Charger coach Julie Hodges said. “Many of the girls were underclassmen too. I started to see bright spots and them really learning after we got dominated in the first 10 minutes of the game and that’s an encouraging sign. That’s what’s exciting about this team is our mistakes are easily fixable and we were learning and adjusting on the fly.”
Ali Dobbs scored two of the five goals for the Tiger Cubs with Carissa Trigg, Clair Langdoc, and Evie Brionnes all scoring one goal each.
The 0-1 Chargers will be back at home for their second match of the season on Saturday morning when they host South Vermillion beginning at 10 a.m.
Girls Golf
Mounties continue to pile up wins
Southmont hosted South Putnam at the Crawfordsville Country Club on Wednesday and continued their winning ways by besting the Eagles 188-224.
Addison Meadows once again earned meadlist honors with a 38. Kelsey Thompson shot a 47, Stella Snook a 49, Madisyn Posthauer a 54, and both Parker Church and Courtlyn Carpenter both shot 58’s in the Mountie win.
Southmont will now get ready to host their annual Southmont Invite on Saturday with a 1 p.m. start.
