A word about Trump assassination attempts

Posted

An anonymous unsigned letter appeared in my mailbox on Monday. The author appeals to me to write in the Journal Review about assassination attempts against Donald Trump. My immediate response was to think about a column about violence in our society. However, the letter writer wants a specific statement against attacks on Donald Trump, not just a generalized statement against attacking politicians.

He or she has read my columns carefully, for which I am grateful. He or she understands several characteristics of my columns. I write primarily about local conditions and do not tilt at more lofty windmills. I avoid politics and religion, which are divisive, preferring to focus attention on patriotism and faith that might generate some unity. I propose rational propositions that people of diverse life experiences and commitments might discuss and discover agreement.

That said, I agree with the letter writer that assassination attempts on Donald Trump are wrong and immoral. I hope this response satisfies the letter writer.
