Architect hired to redraw city’s zoning map

The city took the next step Wednesday toward updating Crawfordsville’s zoning rules, hiring an architect to redraw the zoning map once the changes are in place.

The Board of Public Works and Safety approved a $2,000 agreement with GRW Engineering to create the map as officials gather input from stakeholders including property developers and business owners on the zoning ordinance. The process was expected to take more than a year to complete.

“Every decade or so we step back and we look at the zoning code because things change,” Mayor Todd Barton said. “As you’ve applied the current code for a number of years, you find the bugs here and there, things that aren’t user friendly.”

The code was last updated in 2009.

In other business, the board held off approving the sale of a city-owned parking lot until an abandoned vehicle is removed. The city received an offer from an adjacent property owner for the lot at the former Frances Wooden recreation center on North Grant Avenue.

“We’ve just been mowing and maintaining it for decades,” Barton said.

The board also approved a lease extension for the wellness clinic, which moves to the city’s south side in December. The agreement keeps the clinic at retired OB/GYN Dr. Mel Trivedi’s former office near Franciscan Health Crawfordsville for another month until the new site is ready.

Crawfordsville shares the cost for leasing the clinic with Montgomery County, the three school districts and Hoosier Heartland State Bank.

The street department received approval to mow properties at 403 Russell Ave. owned by Ed & Curt Properties LLC of Ladoga, 412 W. North St. owned by James Baker of Carbon and 406 Binford St. owned by Aaron Wall of Crawfordsville.

Additional mowing was approved for properties at 1100 W. Market St. owned by Mark Sipe of El Dorado, Arkansas, and 1711 E. Main St. owned by Benjamin Chang of West Chester, Pennsylvania.

The city also received approval to clean up trash on properties at 500 Tinsley Ave. owned by Ed & Curt Properties and 1009 Tuttle Ave. owned by Patty Busse of Crawfordsville.

Trash will also be cleared from the property at 6 Circle Drive owned by Lisa Clayton of Crawfordsville if the garbage hasn’t been removed by Monday.
