Area golfers end season at regional

INDIANAPOLIS — The competition was at an all-time high on Saturday at the IHSAA girls’ golf regional at Smock Golf Course, but it was still mostly all smiles for area golfers as they saw their seasons come to a close.

Crawfordsville posted a team score of 443, led by Bailey Mittal’s 93.

The round was Mittal’s third and final regional of her career. The senior rebounded with a 46 on the first 9-holes after taking a 9 on the first hole of the morning.

Evie Redding fired a 110, Gwyn Redding a 113, Sadie Walker shot a 127 and Carli Payne a 148.

“It was a great experience in so many ways,” Crawfordsville coach Tony Thomas said. “We tried to emphasize this week that today was a reward for a good good season. Some great kids and going to miss those three seniors.”

It was Crawfordsville’s first trip to the regional since 2009.

Southmont junior Macie Shirk fired a 102, following a 54 on the front with a 48 on the last 9-holes.

“She now has a taste of what it’s like and she can pass that along to the rest of the team, and hopefully next year we bring five instead of one,” Southmont coach Bill Whalen said. “She was consistent most of the year for us. We could always count on her.”

North Montgomery sophomore Grace Littell also enjoyed her first regional experience by shooting a 117.

Charger coach Nick Johnson knows it will be a good stepping stone moving forward.

“I told her coming into the week that there wasn’t really any expectations on her, I just wanted to see how she could perform,” Johnson said. “Obviously this is a very tough regional and getting out was probably next to impossible right now, but going into next year it’s a good building block for us.”

Westfield won the tournament with a low score of 305. Carmel also advanced with a 310, and Center Grove a 320 — all advancing to the state finals.

Samantha Brown of Westfield was the medalist with a 73.
