Welding students shine at contest

West Central Indiana CTE hosted its second welding competition on Thursday.

Twenty welding students from Area 30 Career Center, Wabash River CTE, Walker Career Center and West Central Indiana CTE participated in the competition.

The competition was designed to test the skill and knowledge of each program’s students abilities. Each program created a team of students where their students competed in a specific category. Those categories include Theory, SMAW, GTAW, GMAW. All teams competed in two rounds. At the end of the competition, the top three teams were awarded with trophies and prizes.

Welding students were: William Almeda, Tilmon Black, Creek Caldwell, Aydin Vanzant, Tristen Cox, A.J. Goff, Wyatt Goings, Wyatt Koch, Kameran Krug, Jaylin Payne, Breann Townsend, Daniel Woody, Jeffery Bell, Alejandra Cayetano, Robert Quintana, Gavin Wilcher, Jacob Hughes, Israel Rose, Brent Runyan and Logan Walker.

There was also a Best of Show competition for West Central Indiana CTE Year I Welding Students. Students were able to craft a weldment for one of three themes. Winners for this event were: Gage Edwards (Outdoor Theme), Aaron McMasters (Vehicle Theme) and Hunter Alesi (Disney Theme).

The sponsors for this competition were B & L Engineering Inc., Buzzi Unicem, C&F Fabricating LLC, Hendrickson, Hobart Institute of Welding Technology, JHI Enterprises, Kiwanis Club Crawfordsville, L & N Welding, Newton Welding & Fabrication, Nucor, Vincennes University and Zachary Farms.

“The second annual welding competition showcased an awe-inspiring display of student craftsmanship,” said Jessica McClamroch, program coordinator for West Central Indiana CTE. “Welders forged not just metal but a testament to their artistry and precision, which takes a lot of talent. As chairman of this event, I cannot thank our industry partners enough as their support ignited this event to be bigger and better this year. It is with their partnership we are shaping a brighter future for the welding community right here in Montgomery County.”
