Crawfordsville’s girls tennis team claimed the title of sectional champion for the sixth year in a row on Thursday, beating out Western Boone with a final score of 4–1.

Among the Athenian victors were No. 2 singles player Mabel Hoar over WeBo’s Jade Strong with a score of 6-1, 6-3; No. 3 singles player Caroline Bowling over Eisley Whiteley, 6-4, 3-6, 11-9; No. 1 doubles players Isla Seward and Alayna Hall over Paige Anderson and Grace Maners, 6-0, 6-2; and No. 2 doubles players Elliot Baker and Sarah Melevage over Mallory Hayden and Cami Baird, 6-1, 1-6, 6-0. WeBo’s No. 1 singles player Izzy Adams reigned over Crawfordsville’s CC Cox in a 6-3, 6-4 match.

“I think we have a method to our madness,” said Crawfordsville head coach Kara Amundson. “Every single one of them has done something outside of the season, so in the summer, whether it’s playing tournaments or doing drills, private lessons, hitting on their own, each one of these members has put in the work to get to where they are.”

WeBo’s loss still marks a comeback from last year’s tournament, when the team lost 1-4 to North Montgomery in the quarterfinal. This year, WeBo managed to beat Lebanon 4-1 in the semifinal alongside Crawfordsville’s 3-2 win against North after the Athenians’ 4-1 victory over Southmont.

“We had a good round one win, 4-1 versus Lebanon,” said WeBo coach Colin Haney. “I thought we played well today overall. Had a shot there toward the middle of the match, things were looking good, but too many unforced errors at different times to be able to pull out a win.”

Crawfordsville will travel to the Todd Witsken Tennis Center in Carmel on Tuesday for the regional competition, facing off against Carmel High School at 5:15 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online at https://public.eventlink.com/tickets?t=192121.
