Athenian girls repeat as sectional champs

LAFAYETTE — Crawfordsville’s girls track and field team repeated as Lafayette sectional champions on Tuesday. The Athenians’ team depth proved to be the difference against the other 13 sectional opponents. Crawfordsville scored 138 points outdistancing second-place McCutcheon’s 119 points and third-place North Montgomery’s 116.5 points.

Champions for the Athenians were Alea Seward in the 200m dash (26.22) and the 4x400 relay team of Caroline Melevage, Ally Johnson, Maesa Horton and Seward (4:13.86).

Earning second-place were Bea Swick (200m dash), Melevage (400m dash), Katherine Novak (3200m run), Aubrey Lowe (100m hurdles), 4x100 relay team of Olivia Abney, Ally Strickland, Swick and Seward, Sydney Elizondo (high jump and long jump) and Alayna Schroeter (discus).

"I couldn't be more proud of this team and how far they have come this year," said Athenian head coach Amanda Elizondo. "We moved some girls around to fill some slots that were left open from some major contributors last year and the girls have responded far beyond our expectations. Every single girl on our team contributed in some way to this championship."

North Montgomery claimed three championships. Ella McManomy won the 100m dash (12.65), Alyssa Mantesta won the discus (78-3) and Gracie Ratcliff won the 100m hurdles (16.20).

Finishing as sectional runner-up for the Chargers were Ratcliff (300m hurdles), the 4x400m relay team of Makayla Holt, Ratcliff, Sophia Powell and McManomy, Paige Yarger (pole vault) and Abigail Cain (discus).

Fountain Central’s top finishers were Lily Gregory who placed sixth in the high jump and London DePugh who placed seventh in the 800m run and had ninth place finishes in the 100m hurdles and high jump.

Lafayette Sectional team scores: Crawfordsville 138, McCutcheon 119, North Montgomery 116.5, Lafayette Jefferson 78, Seeger 46, North Vermillion 33, Central Catholic 27, Clinton Central 27, Attica 14, Frankfort 13, Fountain Central 4.5, Covington 2.

Southmont competed in the Terre Haute North Sectional and placed eighth.

Mountie top individual finishers were Layla Gomez in fourth in shot put and 10th in discus. Molly Williams placed fifth in pole vault and sixth in high jump. Darby Cottrell and Layla Shaw placed seventh in the 3200m run and 100m hurdles, respectively.

Terre Haute North Sectional team scores were Terre Haute South 158, Northview 112, Terre Haute North 88, Greencastle 85.5, North Putnam 44, South Putnam 32.5, Sullivan 31, Southmont  21.5, South Vermillion 17, West Vigo 14.5, Riverton Parke 12 and Parke Heritage 7.

The top 3 finishers in each event advance to regional competition.

The Lafayette Jefferson regional qualifiers will return to Jefferson for the May 26 Lafayette Regional. Terre Haute North regional qualifiers will compete at Ben Davis.
