With a 9-0 win over North Montgomery on Thursday, Crawfordsville boys’ soccer gained a share of the Sagamore Conference championship for the first time since 2016.
Ryotaro Nishina scored four goals and had three assists, while Andrew Jones had two goals and an assist, and Emmett Bowman scored a goal and had two assists. Joseph Sanchez and Yeison Cifuentes added goals.
Crawfordsville put 20 shots on goal in the first half and led North Montgomery 8-0 at the half.
“Respect the fact that North is in a pretty tough position,” Crawfordsville coach Marcus Hale said. “We’ve played a lot more games this year than they have, so congrats to them for competing the whole game, because that’s not an easy thing to do.
“At the same time, there are things we worked on to make us better, because we have more games to play. It’s one step closer to accomplishing some of the goals we have.”
Owen Query saved 12 first half shots in goal for North Montgomery, but coach Tristain Hall felt like the Chargers failed to execute their defensive game plan.
“He (Query) played really well,” Hall said. “But obviously as a defense we didn’t really execute our game plan to how we would have liked.”
The win pushes Crawfordsville to 11-2-1 and 6-0 in the Sagamore Conference.
They’ll play for the outright Sagamore Conference title next Wednesday at Danville. A feat they’ve never accomplished.
“We knew going into it knowing we needed to win today,” Hale said. “And by winning today we’ve at least clinched the share of conference. If we win that game, we’ve definitely achieved one of the goals we set out at the beginning of the year.”
